The White Horse Pottery

The White Horse Pottery We have been making pots here for 25years , come and vist us and see pots being made. Trevor has been working in the Pottery since 1995.

The Pottery has been both work and home place for Trevor and his family since January 2002. He trained under Stephen Humm and has been working independently since 2001. Trevor is a local man and is glad to continue the 'tradition of old' in Westbury. (Westbury was mentioned in the Doomsday book as having a pottery). Being a potter is hard work, especially in those cold winter months, when everythi

ng seems so much harder to manipulate, but once we’ve got the bit between our teeth, there are times where you feel guilty about enjoying your work so much. It’s fascinating to see and feel these lumps of clay changing into usable and beautiful handmade pottery objects. Trevor’s desire is to create potteries that look and feel complete in themselves. He considers pots to be like people, they have a head, shoulders, waist and belly. They are all different and have their own character. There is something fascinating about the way pottery is produced, not a lot has changed about it for the last 2000 years. Two big concessions made to modern times are his electric wheel and the gas kiln which he has co-designed and built with Paul. When you come and visit us, you’ll be able to see Trevor at work. Trevor works with red Earthenware clay and produces a wide variety of handmade pottery, personalised pottery such as terracotta and glazed pots, everything is hand thrown, Cath who came to work with Trevor in 2015 helps in the pottery process and she also runs the classes that we offer such as one to one and group sessions. The Pottery premise was built 150 years ago by the Anglican Church as a school, a role which it retained until the 1960s. It’s a handsome stone building with fine windows, a bell tower, amazing chimneys and a slate roof. You will have lots to see as you visit and look around our working pottery.
