Skidmores was founded in 1919 by Stanley Harold Skidmore. He prided himself on hard work and personal service.

Skidmores was founded in 1919 by Stanley Harold Skidmore who came to Weston super Mare to convalesce after being injured in the 1st World War. He found his perfect location in Worle High Street and set about serving the local community with household goods and services. This ethos was passed down through his twin sons, Bill and Bert, who carried the business through the 60s, 70s and 1980s giving the business the platform from which it exists today. The current owners Brian and Michael Skidmore have kept these family values and traditional services going through these modern times making sure the customer always comes first. 📖 FROM THE SKIDMORES ARCHIVE… 💪

This photograph takes us back to Banwell Weightlifting Club in 1936.

And what really stands out is just how different training looked 90 years ago.

There were no rows of modern machines, cable stations or apps tracking every rep. Just some very basic equipment, a few heavy bars and a group of men who clearly took their training seriously.

Fast forward to today and Weston-super-Mare is full of gyms, with more equipment, technology and choice than they could ever have imagined back then.

The equipment may have changed, but the reason people train probably hasn’t.

To belong. To push themselves. To test their limits. To build confidence, discipline and mental grit and to be around other people who understand why you keep turning up.

That part of gym culture feels just as familiar today as it probably did in 1936.

That’s what makes old photographs like this from the Skidmores archive so good. They might be from another era, but there’s still something in them we can relate to today.

📸 WESTON — DO YOU REMEMBER THIS?

We’ve loved looking back through The Skidmores Story, but it got us thinking about something bigger…

Just how much has Weston changed over the years?

So over the next few weeks, we’re going to dig out a few places that have disappeared from the town and see how many memories they bring back.

First up… the OK American Diner. 🇺🇸🍔

For some people, this picture will bring it all flooding back straight away.

For others, you might be looking at it thinking:

“Hang on… Weston had an American diner like THAT?!”

The neon, the chrome, the booths, the whole classic American Diner look, it was certainly hard to miss.

So we want to hear from you…

📖 BEFORE CORONATION STREET… 🍦

We thought The Skidmores Story had come to an end…

but after the amazing response, we’ve decided to dig a little deeper into the archives and share a few more stories over the coming weeks.

And this one is a cracker.

These photographs were taken at the Worle Flower Show and show actress Maudie Edwards enjoying a Skidmore’s ice cream with Worle’s Reverend Valance Cook.

At the time, it was simply a lovely local moment.

But Maudie would go on to become part of British television history.

In 1960, she appeared as Elsie Lappin in the very first episode of Coronation Street and she was the first performer to speak in the first scene of the very first episode.

That means before the Rovers Return, before Ken Barlow, before decades of Corrie became part of British life…

Maudie Edwards was here in Worle, enjoying a Skidmore’s ice cream. 🍦

And if you look at the second photograph, you can also spot Bernard “Banger” Ford and Rex Perks, two of the Skidmore’s ice cream men, on the right.

It’s these little connections that make old photographs so special.

One minute you’re looking at a village flower show.

The next, you realise you’re looking at someone who became part of television history.
