🏡THIS is whats going on here >>> AND we now have a start date in July!

Hi, I'm Heather, an interior designer and for more than 20 years I've been helping people create homes that feel right and are finally finished.
Homely homes 🙂

I've just opened the waitlist for The Beautiful Home Academy, a monthly membership for people who feel overwhelmed by decorating decisions and want expert guidance before they spend lots of money on (potentially) the wrong things.

This isn't about learning interior design principles or watching endless training videos from top TV/Celebrity designers.

Its about me helping you with YOUR home.

Every month you'll be able to bring your questions to two live coaching calls and get practical advice on your own home, your own rooms and your own situation and dilemmas.

Its very different from a traditional higher priced full room design service.

The Beautiful Home Academy is more about the decisions that tend to stop people from finishing a room and ending up down a rabbit hole 🐇 for weeks (or forever).

The Academy is valuable guidance and reassurance at any critical point in your decorating...an expert eye when you're absolutely stuck and don't know what to do next.

Because it's often the smaller decisions that bring everything to a halt and send people down a decorating rabbit hole for weeks... or even years. 🐇

🏡The paint colour you've absolutely no idea about
🏡The sofa you're about to spend £2,000 and desperately need to get it right
🏡Why your room still feels underwhelming even though you have bought all the key things
🏡The curtain nightmare because curtains cause nightmares😭
🏡The tricky furniture layout in your awkward space

The Academy is there for you when you are doing your own decor and need help to make those decisions with confidence, so you can just finally move forward.

It's about bringing your actual decorating dilemmas to me and getting a professional eye on them before you make a decision.

The Academy opens on 1 July when the Early Bird Price is available for Founding Members! We start week of 10 July.
Founding Members will be able to join for just £20 per month (less than the cost of a tin of paint) and if you join at that rate you'll keep it for as long as you remain a member. (Price goes up after that to £27)
If you'd like to know more, you can join the waitlist here:

Chatting with a new client today all about giving her kitchen a refresh.

It’s a beautiful expensive kitchen with granite worktops but was fitted 20 yrs ago and she’s booked one of those painters who can re-spray the doors, but now she’s in a panic because she can’t decide what colour to pick, from the 1 million he can actually do!

She has saved hundreds of images on Pinterest, screenshots from Instagram, photos from magazines and endless ideas on her phone, all scattered across devices 🤨

Yet she can’t decide.

Not because she doesn’t have enough inspiration but in my view, because she now has too much.

Every new image creates another possibility, another decision and another reason to keep looking instead of actually choosing.

Soooo, what Im saying is…at some point, more inspiration stops being helpful and starts becoming a massive road block.

If you've been researching your room for months (or even years), perhaps what you need now isn't another idea.

Perhaps you just need a decision.

This is exactly why I've created The Beautiful Home Academy.

Because most people don't need another Pinterest board. They don't need another magazine or another saved post.

What they really need is someone to help them cut through the noise, trust their instincts and make decisions with confidence.

The Academy waitlist is now open if you want to hear more about it and decide if its for you, or not.

If that sounds like exactly what you need right now, you can join the waitlist here:

PS Everyone on the waitlist will get first access to the Early Bird membership price of £20 per month before it increases to the standard price of £27 on 12 July.

The decorating mistake nobody talks about isn't usually choosing the wrong paint colour, buying the wrong sofa or hanging the wrong curtains.

More often than not, it's never making the decision at all.

A wall covered in sample pots because
none of them feel quite right or a sofa that's been sitting in an online basket for months while you keep looking for something better.

A room that's almost there, but somehow never quite gets finished.

Not because you don't care about your home or because you don't have good taste.

Usually because you've looked at so many options, read so much advice and saved so many ideas that you no longer trust your own judgement and its easier to just sort it out tomorrow!

So you keep researching, scrolling :-/ and saving inspiration in 10 different places.

You keep hoping that eventually the "perfect" answer will appear.
And before you know it six months has gone by and the room still looks exactly the same.

That's one of the reasons I'm creating Beautiful Home Academy.

A place where you can get an interior designer's eyes on your own home, ask questions about your own rooms and get help making decisions before you spend the money.

The founding member waitlist is open now, and the Academy doors will open on 1st July, with the founding member price available until 10th July.

If you'd like to be one of the first to hear when doors open, you can join the waitlist here:

Do you know the no 1 tip I can give you?

Its to collect images of rooms you like BEFORE doing one single thing eg shopping for your room.

This came up this week when someone came to me with the 2nd pair of curtains they had bought from the shops, brought home and looked at them in the room and knew they were wrong again 🤨

This is the wrong order to do things and will be frustrating and infuriating and waste soooooo much time.

But how do you collect your inspiration easily and keep it all together?

Then what do you do with it, how do you interpret it?

We'll be covering that and more in my new monthly mmembership (for less than a small tin of paint) : https://www.beautifulhomeacademy.com/

The Good Room 🏡🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

We had one when I was growing up, it was used it on Christmas Day and possibly 2 other times in any year. It was the largest room in our house and yet the five of us spent our time not in it 🙄

The “good room” that looks really lovely, has plenty of space, nice furniture… and yet somehow it just doesn’t feel right and nobody chooses to be in it.

It’s usually because it’s:
A bit too formal.
A bit stiff.
Not cosy, at all.

It’s quite a nice idea, to have a place you can sit and chat to a friend without having a view of the pile of ironing you’d get elsewhere BUT oddly, people would rather sit somewhere that feels more cosy and relaxing even if the ironing board is in full view.

The major issue with those good rooms (although there are other issues) is the layout…

Everything has usually been pushed out to the edges.

Sofa against the wall.
Chairs spaced out.
A big empty gap in the middle

It might look ok… but it doesn’t feel right.

And the truth is, when a room feels disconnected like that, you just won’t use it as much as you could.

Sometimes all it takes is bringing everything in a bit away from the walls.

And no, it won’t make it feel smaller 🤓

Can I ask you…

🏡Is your sofa pushed up against a wall?

🏡Is your living room quite big but feels a bit formal or underused?

🏡Would you actually like to use it more?

This is exactly the sort of thing we work through inside the Beautiful Home Academy.

It’s not just general tips or ideas, we look at your rooms, your layout, your furniture, and help you make it work properly for how you live.

If this sounds like your room, just say “ME” below or send me a message I’d love to help you get it feeling right 😊

🏡I was discussing paint colours for an outdoor shed this week, we decided on the colour and I went to order…. I was slightly horrified at the cost, paint, as well as everything else has really gone up in price. A lot.

And it is for this reason, among others, that when I help people decide on their decisions about decorating that I always steer towards the timeless.

In other words, whatever you choose shouldn’t date, too much. That way it will look better longer. We all have better things to spend money on so why risk having a high fashion trend look that you get tired of in 5 minutes!

I’m not against trends, just saying be selective and careful.

One of the main ones I can think of recently is black taps and black showers 🚿 🤦🏻‍♀️

This is why I created my Beautiful Home Academy, to share how to achieve a timeless home and avoid wasting money! … find out more here:

1 Minute Design Tip: Curtains (this happens all the time…)

I had a message just today from someone who’d bought new curtains.

Gone to the shop, dithered about choosing, selected something, bought them, brought them home, unwrapped them, hung them up… and instantly hated them.

They were eyelet curtains, same length as the short bedroom window which had a radiator underneath.

So they just stopped halfway down the wall, on the window sill.

And the colour was a warm beige, but everything else in the room was cool grey… so it all felt off and it was off because the undertones were having a huge argument!

And honestly, this happens all the time.

You go to the shop, spend money, bring something home thinking its the perfect thing… and it just isn’t.

Not because you’ve got bad taste.

It was just because going to the shops was the wrong place to start.

If I can give you one tip here, it’s this:

Curtains aren’t just about covering a window.

They affect the height of the room, the proportions, the softness, the colour balance… everything and they usually want to go higher and longer than you think.

And when they’re not quite right, the whole room feels slightly off, even if you can’t quite put your finger on why.

This is exactly the kind of thing I’ll be helping with inside The Beautiful Home Academy, so you don’t end up wasting time and money on things that never quite feel right.

✨ 🏡A thought on “timeless” choices for your home… ✨

I had a question in my free group about flooring and choosing one...

Too grey,will it date?
Too warm,is it already dated?

And people are sometimes stuck (a lot) when choosing flooring.

When you’re choosing something like flooring, worktops, or anything that’s a big, expensive part of the room, it’s very tempting to try and get it “right” for the current moment.

ANd you feel youre ahead of the curve and have the latest thing/look which will stay your fav thing forever. It wont. If its part of an interior trend or some colour that everyone is using.

The truth is, trends move on surprisingly quickly.

And what I’ve found over the years is that the calmest, most comfortable homes are usually the ones where the larger elements are kept quiet (not shouty) , balanced and timeless, rather than trying to follow what’s fashionable at the time.

That doesn’t mean timeless choices are boring at all.
It just means they don’t shout a particular era or trend or fashion.

So, instead of looking at what the showrooms are featuring this season, think about how long certain choices have been around.

Then you can bring in personality, colour, trends if you want and interest through things that are much easier to change like cushions, art, lighting, fabrics.

It takes the pressure off completely and means you will be happier in the long term.

And just to say, if you already have something like a grey floor, it doesn’t mean you’ve got it wrong at all, it just means the rest of the room needs to work a little harder to bring warmth and balance back in and it can be done.

This idea of knowing where to be timeless and where to be more expressive is something I spend a lot of time helping people with.

It’s exactly the sort of thing I’ll be going deeper into inside The Beautiful Home Academy.

If you’d like to hear more about it when I open the doors, you can join the waitlist here:

When it comes to big decisions like flooring, do you find yourself stressed with choices and scared in case you get it wrong?

✨ 🏡🌸Today’s BEFORE & AFTER 🏡🌸✨

A couple of years ago I created a little path with four steps leading down to the Secret Garden at The Pink Cottage.

It’s one of those little areas that I loved as it turned out so well (after a lot of back breaking digging)

But over the winter it had started to look a bit tired. The pebbles had shifted, there were washed away by the various storms, weeds had crept in and it looked very neglected.

So today, with the help of my very patient handyman, we gave it a proper refresh.

We scraped everything off each step, removed the weeds, added fresh pebbles, and then tried something new…

a pebble glue that sets clear and holds them gently in place so it doesn’t all wash away again at the first sign of rain 🌧️

Just a small area… but it already feels so much better.

It made me think how often this happens in our homes as well.

Nothing is dramatically wrong… things have just slowly drifted and the space starts to feel less settled without you quite knowing why.

And very often, it doesn’t take a complete overhaul to fix it… just a few thoughtful adjustments in the right places. Maybe some maintenance.

Here’s a few before, during and after photos below so you can see the difference!

What’s the one little area in your home that’s quietly starting to annoy you every time you walk past it?

🏡🌸🏡 PS
This idea of gently bringing things back into balance rather than starting from scratch (and saving cash ☺️) is something I’ll be talking more about inside The Beautiful Home Academy as well.

✨ A living room update from me… ✨

ART.

It’s such a personal choice, and it’s one of the things that can cause the biggest amount of dithering when you’re designing a room.

I’ve definitely been guilty of the “I’ll just wait until I see something…” approach… which, as you can imagine, can take years 🫣

And in the meantime, the room just sits there feeling a bit unfinished.

But actually, when you find a piece you really love, it can be the perfect starting point for the whole room.

You can take colours from it, build a palette around it, and suddenly everything begins to feel much more connected.

I often find that when the wall behind the artwork is painted in a colour taken from the piece itself, the whole room lifts in a really lovely way.

(The room colour palette can be derived from other things like rugs as well(

So… here’s what I’ve just bought for my own living room which is painted green…

When I decorated it a few years ago I didn’t have any art so I’m sort of doing this back to front.

So, what I did was look for a similar colours that are in the room, in the art.

I’ll show you where it ends up once it’s up, but I’m wondering …

Do you find choosing art easy… or is it something you tend to put off?
