You think you just need curtains… then you’re immediately trying to work out poles, tracks, headings, hooks, lining, fullness, length, fabric and whether curtains are even the right answer in the first place, because there are roman blinds and other blinds.

One of my Beautiful Home Academy members had exactly this dilemma last week with a huge expanse of sliding glass doors in her new extension.

So on our latest Design Support Call I talked her through it...not just the type of curtains themselves, but how they need to work with her new sofa, flooring, paint colours and the rest of the room and HOW to ensure they do.

She couldn’t actually make the live call, but I covered her question anyway and she watched the replay afterwards.

And I just loved getting this message from her.

We meet twice a month, if you want details, just comment below and Ill send you over some info 🥰

A bit like having a designer friend you can turn to when you need a bit of advice on the thing youre trying to decide on and everyone has a different opionion 🙈

So, its September and Im trying to look forward to cosy nights, but I do prefer spring summer all day long.

Anyway, nows when its too annoying to put that decorating update off any
longer and at least get started so it gets finished by the busy season in a few months.

Im now looking at new kitchens myself and to be honest I know it should be exciting but the bit where you get people to do the job is just so difficult, Ive been putting my head in the sand.

But because nothing will get ever done with that approach I gave myself a deadline of end Aug and thats suddenly upon me.

What about you?! Perhaps there’s a room you want to finally finish. A decorating project you want to get moving on. Or something that’s been niggling at you for months because you just can’t decide what to do next.

Tomorrow I’m meeting the members of my Beautiful Home Academy for one of our Design Support Video Calls, and this is exactly what they can bring along.

It doesn’t have to be a huge interior design dilemma.

It might be choosing what to do first, working out which colours will pull everything together, deciding whether something needs replacing, figuring out furniture placement, or simply saying, “This is what I’m thinking of doing. Am I heading in the right direction?”

These decisions can seem quite small and simple until it’s your own home and your own money you’re spending.

And when you’re not sure, it’s very easy to keep researching, keep putting it off or just blunder forwards and hope you’ve made the right choice.

Sometimes a second pair of experienced eyes is all you need to go from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to thinking now I know what I’m doing.

That’s exactly what the Beautiful Home Academy is for.

It’s open now and it’s £27 a month, which is less than a tin of the wrong paint (or a handful of tester pots!).

And if you join us today, you can come along to tomorrow’s Design Support Call and start getting your autumn decorating plans moving in the right direction.
No contract, leave anytime.

I couldn’t stop watching this and imagining how easy it would be to create your own piece of large scale art if you have a wall that’s crying out for something.
A piece of MDF from B&Q and a bit of moulding, couldn’t be too difficult.?!?🫣😊

Would you try it?!

If I wanted to choose paint and then repaint a room this weekend, these are the 3 things I’d do…

And the first thing I wouldn’t do is go to the paint shop and start looking at colour cards...thats where everything goes wrong, you get overwhelmed and leave the shop in a different mood than you arrived in ;-/

1. I’d look at what’s already in the room.

Look at the things that are staying, your flooring, sofa, bed, furniture or other large pieces of furniture, curtains and perhaps a favourite piece of artwork.

These things already contain colours and they’re giving you the starting point for your room.

2. I’d then create a simple colour palette.
This doesn’t need to be complicated.
Pick out four or five colours you can already see in the room.

Look closely at your flooring in particular. Is it warm or cool? What colours can you see in your sofa, curtains or artwork?

Once you start pulling those colours together, choosing a wall colour becomes much easier because you’re no longer choosing from thousands of completely unrelated paint colours.

The most important thing is to pick a colour that is closely related to whats in the room.

3. I’d then think about e how I want the room to feel.
Light and airy?
Warm and cosy?
Calm and relaxing?
Richer and more cocooning?

That feeling will help you decide which direction to take your colour palette and THEN I’d start looking at paint colours.

And heres an idea, if you have art or a rug or even a cushion you absolutely love, maybe that can give you a few colours, see the attached pic!

PS
This is exactly the sort of thing I help people with inside the Beautiful Home Academy group.

If you’re stuck on a room, you can show me what you’re working with and I can help you work out what to do next...before you spend money on something that maybe doesn’t work.

The Beautiful Home Academy is currently open and it’s £27 a month and we are having 2 video calls a month where I get to help and advise people on THEIR dilemmas...its all very well doing your own research and saving lots of pics but making it work in your home is the bit I help with, for a fraction of the cost of a full consultation!

Chatting to a friend the other day about her new bathroom renovation, she was explaining where she thought the shower was going to go when I realised I had a little design tip I wanted to share. But first, I needed to know one thing.

Was the bathroom big or small? "Quite big,"
Perfect 🛁

Because that led me straight to my bright idea which involves one of my least favourite most annoying things in a bathroom...

Glass shower screens 🤨

I know they're practical, and I have one myself, but I spend far more time than I'd like trying to keep it clean.

My suggestion was this: if you have the space, why not think about building a wall around the shower instead?

It creates a much more spa-like feel, gives a little more privacy and allows you to include lovely details such as recessed shelves, niches and softer lighting.

And if a full wall feels too much, you could always build a half wall and add glass above it.

It's one of those little design decisions that can completely change the feel of a room.

I love sharing ideas like this because they're often the things that make the biggest difference. It's not always about spending more money.

Sometimes it's simply about looking at a space differently and finding a solution you might not have considered before.

These are exactly the sorts of conversations we're already having inside the Beautiful Home Academy, where members are bringing their own decorating questions and getting support as they work through their homes, one decision at a time for a monthly cost of less than a tin of paint £27

If you're working on a room at the moment, I'd love to know which one, tell me in the comments.

What if you had someone to ask before you spent the money?"

How many decorating projects have you let drag on for ages because you just couldn't decide? I know its usually just one decision that holds things up.

And because you don't want to get it wrong, everything gets put on hold while you ponder for another month.

Imagine having an interior designer friend you could simply ask.

Someone to say, "Yes, that'll work," or "Here's what you need to do"

That's exactly why I created the Beautiful Home Academy.

Im already inside helping members get unstuck with those everyday decorating decisions that can otherwise cost weeks or become an expensive mistake.

Just wondering...what's the last thing you bought for your home that you ended up secretly regretting? 😳🤔😬☹️

Was it more than £27? 🤔

If so, the Academy could pay for itself with just one piece of advice.

The link is below, and I'd love you to join us for our next call, on 19 Aug.

In the last call I helped establish a colour palette for a bedroom update and helped improve furniture layout and accessorising issues in a living room, among other things 🏡💞

This morning was the very first Beautiful Home Academy Design Support call on zoom and I loved meeting the group in there and helping them get unstuck with their dilemmas.

We talked about their real actual rooms, real decorating decisions and all those bits that make you feel completely stuck.

Paint colours. Curtains. Carpets. Artwork. Lighting.

What to do when you’ve already bought the sofa and when NOT to paint the walls…I saved one member from doing just that and potentially wasting £££, never mind the pain of living with the wrong choice ;-/

What to do when the room just isn’t coming together and one of the big things we came back to was this… the ACTUAL paint is the last thing to choose, not the first.

I know. That goes against what most of us naturally want to do.
People just want to grab a paint chart, pick a lovely colour with a lovely name and get going.

But when you choose the room, the style, the fixed pieces and the colour palette first, the paint choice becomes so much easier, I promise.

I also mentioned one of my favourite places to start when I’m looking at paint colours: the Little Greene colour card.
Their colours are just beautifully put together, and the colour card is free.

You can order yours here:

The replay from today’s call is now sitting inside the Beautiful Home Academy private members area and we have our next call in 2 weeks.

It’s a place where you can bring your actual room, your actual questions and your “I have no idea what to do next” moments, and get calm, practical help.
No overwhelm and no pressure to get everything perfect.
Just help with the next decision.

And because the Academy is always open, you can join us whenever you’re going to tackle your next bit of decor.
