Patience & Gough Furniture British luxury design house creating collectable furniture, distinctive textiles and bespoke interiors.

Crafted for designers, collectors and private clients worldwide. I find old furniture which wouldn't get a second look and give them a new lease of life. Experimenting with paint techniques and printing patterns I take them from drab dull wood to colourful fun chic pieces. I love nothing more than to be covered in paint getting my hands dirty.

The mill closed. The patterns didn’t.
Following our recent film about the loss of R.A. Smart and the challenges facing British textile manufacturing, we wanted to show you the silk itself.
These are three original Patience & Gough patterns, translated from our artwork and woven in pure silk.
Silk changes the way you see them. The linework appears sharper, the colours catch the light and details emerge as the fabric moves. The same pattern takes on a lighter, more luminous quality—almost like a piece of jewellery.
One of the designs has already been used on an Overgaard & Dyrman chair, showing how beautifully the silk can work on furniture, smaller upholstered pieces and decorative details.
For now, we have approximately one metre of each design remaining from the original production.
These final lengths matter to us, not simply as records of what R.A. Smart made, but as fabrics that deserve to live on in rooms and on furniture.
That is why this story doesn’t end with the closure of a mill.
We’re now working with Gainsborough Silk Weaving Co. to recreate all three designs in pure silk and continue their story through British weaving.
We’re also about to reveal two entirely new Patience & Gough patterns.

BRITISH MANUFACTURING IS DISAPPEARING

We spent £4,000 turning our recycled velvet patterns into a design that could be woven in pure silk.

Then R.A. Smart—the British textile mill producing it—went into administration.

When a mill closes, we lose more than a supplier. We lose machinery, jobs and skills that may never return.

A beautifully restrained interior by Totem Studio, where natural oak, soft neutrals and clean architectural lines create a calm, contemporary backdrop.
Our Tora Pistachio was used on the Overgaard & Dyrman chairs and carried through onto the sofa cushions, bringing a more decorative layer into the scheme without disrupting that sense of calm.
The greens and warmer tiger tones sit particularly well against the natural timber, adding colour and personality while still feeling connected to the wider palette.

A guest bedroom built around pattern, scale and colour.
Rather than repeating one fabric throughout, we layered three of our patterns across the room, each at a different scale and in a different material.
The curtains are made in Panthera Savoy velvet in the large scale, giving the window a stronger graphic presence and allowing the pattern to unfold across the full drop.






On the bed, Tora Rubrae velvet is used in the small scale. Although Tora and Panthera are different designs, they share the same illustrative language, so they sit comfortably together. The blue-grey foliage in Rubrae picks up the cooler tones in Savoy, while the soft toffee and cream sit naturally against the warmth of the rust wallcovering.

The headboard is upholstered in Panthera Ch*****ne linen, with the artwork resized specifically for the proportions of the piece. Its lighter ground gives the room a quieter moment between the stronger colour and pattern elsewhere.

The result feels layered and collected rather than matched - warm, decorative and full of character, but still calm enough for a bedroom.
