*FAQ*

I thought I’d use today’s FAQ prompt to explain how to commission me to do work.

📍GET IN TOUCH
Drop me an email or WhatsApp with some details, and ideally a photograph, of what you would like me to do.

📍INITIAL ESTIMATE
Using the details you’ve provided, I will give you an initial estimate for the work. This gives you a no obligation ball park figure of the costs involved.

📍FABRIC CHOICE + MEASURE UP
Before ordering your chosen fabric, I will need to see the piece to measure up. It also lets me firm up the estimate with a few more details.

📍CONFIRMATION + DEPOSIT
Once we have agreed on the estimate and decided on the fabric, a deposit (50% of fabric costs) will secure your allotted time slot.

📍WORK BEGINS!
When your time slot comes around, I get my hands on the old upholstery and the transformation begins!

📍COLLECTION /DELIVERY
Once the work is finished, I will contact you to arrange getting your newly reinvigorated piece back home. Full payment is due once the piece is completed.

*REVISIT*

I’ve decided to throw it right back to the first paid upholstery work I completed by myself. I wouldn’t even like to guess how many hours of hard work it took, I was very slow!

I’m still proud of it, and the standard to which it was completed. Mum wouldn’t let it leave the workshop unless it was to her standards, quite right too! To this day, 12 years later, the same high standards are still applied to everything that leaves the workshop.

*HOW IT’S MADE*

With love and care. I know this sounds super cheesy, but it’s true. We add all the little details that we can think of to help anything we make look its best, and function as intended, for as long as possible.

As a result, a relatively simple thing, like making a scatter cushion may take a little more thought from us than you might expect. For example,
📍before we even cut the fabric we are placing the pattern so that cushions match, and
📍we overlock all the raw edges so the fabric doesn’t fray and degrade.

These are just the little things we do before the cushion components even touch the sewing machine! They may seem like little things, but we think they make a big difference to the quality of the products we make, and therefore are absolutely worth doing.

*CHALLENGEs AND WINS*

Getting amazing feedback like this is definitely a ✨big win ✨. I really appreciate when someone takes the time to send feedback or review my work online. It really makes my day.

The other reason these work for today’s theme is that I find posting things like this challenging. Honestly, some of these drafts have been on my phone for over six months.

Posting positive feedback was always the kind of thing that I found easier if it was talking about Mum’s work. But I am proud of what I do, and the feedback I receive, so I will try to push on and post about it more in future.

*DESIGN DETAILS*
This is one of the things that sets us apart from mass produced furniture. I genuinely treat every piece of furniture as if it were my own. I make the little choices throughout working on a piece to give the best finish and the maximum longevity.

Often it’s things that aren’t seen, such as adding a layer under the final fabric of an outside arm to give support and help protect the final fabric. Or it could be adding a layer of hessian (with a little tuck to aid movement) between springs and foam to ensure a seat lasts longer.

In his video I’m hand sewing the outside back on to this little bedroom chair. There are other quicker methods for doing this, but I personally prefer the way this finish looks. It is how I would want my chair to be finished, so it’s what I do for my customers.

*WHO IS IT FOR*

This one was an easy one for me to answer,
💜my little family💜.

I love the flexibility that running my own business allows me. It has meant that I can take school holidays off, help on school trips, and basically set my working hours around being a Mum.

Don’t get me wrong, to find the time to fit everything in sometimes I find myself writing emails in the wee small hours. (I love a scheduled send!)

My son is growing up fast and I know there may come a time when he doesn’t want to spend the holidays with me. Until that times comes, I’ll be scheduling things so we can be together.

*CURRENTLY WORKING ON*

I don’t share full images of my work until my customers have seen their pieces first. So, instead of showing what I’m working on right now, I thought I would show the project I have most recently completed.

Just before February half term I delivered this finished Edwardian five piece lounge set. Different amounts of work were carried out depending on the condition of each piece. All were recovered, and some had their seats re-upholstered too. It was an enjoyable challenge to make the re-upholstered seats match the ones that had not been touched.

*WHY I MAKE*

I thought I would use this prompt to tell you how I (Lynne) joined the business. I took an unusual path to a career in making.

Before joining Mum at Windermere Upholstery, I was working and studying in biological sciences. While I was writing up my thesis, I moved back to Windermere and started helping Mum in the workshop. I loved every minute of working with Mum. I have always sewn, crafted and enjoyed making, but this was the first time I thought that I could make a career of it.

After finishing my thesis, I decided to join Mum in the workshop part-time and I haven’t looked back since. Mum trained me on-the-job and I have been working as an upholsterer for 12 years. I don’t think this is a career path that’s well trodden, but I’m so happy to find myself here.

*WHAT WE MAKE*

At Windermere Upholstery we take on both upholstery and reupholstery work. I’ve searched through my photo archives to find lots of different pieces to show the wide variety of project we undertake. I’ve included armchairs, sofas, headboards, drop in seats, bench seating, window cushions, bedroom chairs and scatter cushions.

Basically, as long as it’s covered in fabric, we make it, or at least we’re willing to see if we can!

*TRIAL + ERROR*

I’m always thinking about how I can make things at the workshop run more efficiently. It could be, for example, how things are organised or how work is scheduled. I’m always refining things and trying to make them the best they can be. This involves plenty of trial and, inevitably, error.

With this in mind, I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about something I’m going to trial. I’m going to get rid of my set workshop hours. This doesn’t mean I’m going to be working any less, it just means I’m not committed to keeping certain hours at the workshop.

As I’m on my own at the moment, I have found keeping the set hours has stopped me being able to work as efficiently as I would like. There have been a few times recently when I have needed to be away from the workshop for work, but the set hours have become, if I’m honest, a bit of a hindrance.

Moving forward, if you are passing the workshop and notice the door is open, please come in and say hello. If you are making a special trip to the workshop, it’s probably best to arrange a time and date ahead of time to make sure I will be about.
