When we approach designing an open-plan living and kitchen-dining area like this one, our design process starts not with a floor plan, but with a question: "How does this family live?"

The real luxury of an open space isn't just its size, but how it supports a household’s natural flow. In this one photograph, you can picture multiple stories unfolding at once.

At Wood Lane House, we carefully balanced connection and definition. The distinct pendant lights over the dining area and the layered wood finishes visually 'anchor' each zone, creating a clear sense of 'place'. Yet, the shared light palette, seamless flooring and repeating natural textures keep the whole space unified and calm.

As the calendar turns to October, the rhythm of home life shifts. Days become shorter and inevitably, muddier. During these autumn and winter months, utility and boot rooms truly prove their invaluable worth.

More time spent indoors often means more washing drying inside; creating a need for dedicated, organised drying spaces. Our thoughtfully designed utility rooms provide that specific answer, offering hanging rails and integrated ventilation so that wet clothes have a proper place to dry; keeping the rest of your home free of clutter in the circulation spaces.

A great utility or boot room creates "a place for everything," preventing the dreaded spread of mud. With seamless integration of low-bench seating, clear shelving, drawers and ample basket storage; these spaces make the seasonal transition a smooth, orderly and elegant one.

Wood Lane is an exploration of organic textures, deep earthy tones and a beautifully grounded atmosphere.

Curate is where we layer the sensory foundation of the home. Long before the walls are finished, it’s about establishing a serene, cohesive language through natural materials. For this project, we focused on an understated palette: the rich texture of leather, the deep tones of Broccoli Brown, refined brass finishes and pale oak tones. It’s a combination designed to feel completely effortless, inviting you to slow down the moment you step inside.

When creating a calm, minimalist home, texture becomes the colour.

Build is where design evolution takes place. It is the raw, unpolished phase where conceptual drawings are translated into physical spaces. Bringing vital extra space to this busy family home meant planning around a generous ground-floor extension grounded by earthy tones and highly practical joinery.

To execute a project that feels minimal, homely, yet functional, the craftsmanship has to be immaculate. There is no hiding behind clever styling at this stage. Instead, the focus turns to the precision of the hands on-site - from the initial framing of the structural timber overhead to the sharp laser alignments mapping out the floors.

The space truly began to shift the moment the raw plaster dried around the architectural skylights, instantly transforming the quality of natural light in the room. Every shadow gap, cladding junction, and custom framework was carefully coordinated to ensure that the finished home functions with absolute ease.

The culmination of every sketch, every site meeting and every layer of craftsmanship has resulted in a home that feels like a pure, sun-drenched sanctuary. Our approach here was centred on bringing vital extra space to a busy family home through a light-filled ground-floor extension, wrapping it in calming earthy tones and incredibly practical joinery.

Every corner is designed to support the rhythm of daily life beautifully, proving that functional spaces can be just as inspiring as the main living areas. The kitchen features elements of thoughtful functionality - from a seamless breakfast station that tucks away out of sight to a beautifully integrated bespoke bar and w**e cabinet crafted from warm oak, all set against the deep, enveloping tones of Broccoli Brown. The expansive glazing acts as a living frame, inviting the garden inside, while the thoughtfully organised boot room and utility zones keep family life running effortlessly.

It is calm, highly intentional and perfectly tailored. Everything comes together. At Last.

Thank you to our wonderful clients for trusting our studio to realise this sanctuary for their family. Explore the full gallery for Wood Lane via the link in our bio.

Looking back at this outdoor shower space we designed for our Mallorcan project, we’re asking ourselves: will the UK heatwave accelerate a permanent shift in how we design our homes here?

With the Met Office recently confirming that extreme heat and hotter, longer summers are officially here to stay as our "new baseline," the reality of a changing climate is hitting home. With UK temperatures projected to potentially reach the mid-40s in the coming decades in areas of the UK, our homes need to adapt.

We are already thinking about how British architecture must evolve to handle these new extremes - incorporating deeper shaded areas, integrated ceiling fans for natural airflow and renewable solar energy to power it all sustainably. From plunge pools and outdoor showers to clean energy, we all have a part to play in designing a cooler, lower-carbon future.

Struggling to sleep in this heat?
That oppressive, still air is the ultimate challenge for UK bedrooms. When designing our Mallorcan project, airflow and breathable textures were paramount. With it being the longest heatwave since 1976, here are some tips to help with a good night's sleep:
| Go Raw | Opt for crisp 100% linen or percale cotton. These natural, breathable fibres wick moisture away from the body. Ditch the synthetics.
| Strategic Draping | Even simple sheers can filter sunlight during the day while allowing evening breezes to circulate. Keeping curtains and windows closed during the day, only opening first thing and in the early evening onwards, keeps the air cool in the house.
| Circulate | A good-quality, quiet ceiling fan is a great addition if you have the ceiling height. We have installed beautiful wooden ceiling fans in many of our projects in the UK and abroad.
