It is important to use original breathable materials such as lime mortar when working with historical buildings.

This sample of existing lime mortar will be sent to Stone Tech Ltd t/a Conserv www.lime-mortars.co.Uk for a relatively close match not only on colour but also the aggregate content.

While mortar should be as strong and durable as possible it should always be softer than the surrounding masonry. Otherwise mortar would abrade and damage the surface of the masonry causing bricks deterioration known as bricks spalling.

Wonder how many Mason Bees 🐝 have completed their life cycle in these cylindrical holes?

Over many years these holes or tunnels become extensive galleries that allow rain and other problems to pe*****te the structure of the building, making control imperative to avoid huge remediation costs.
