This weekend we had the privilege of attending The Anniversary Journey at Hopetown Darlington. An extraordinary celebration of 200 years since the world’s first passenger railway journey on the Stockton & Darlington Railway. The occasion was made even more special with a Royal visit from the Duke of Edinburgh, which underlined the national and international significance of this historic milestone.

The highlight of the day was the replica Locomotion No.1 steaming across Skerne Bridge to recreate that ground-breaking journey of 1825. A spine-tingling reminder of how the modern railway age began right here in the North East.

At PLB, we were proud to play our part in Hopetown’s redevelopment. Working alongside partners, we helped reimagine how this globally important story is told. From shaping the visitor experience, to creating interpretation that connects past innovation with future possibility.

To see the site brought to life during such a historic anniversary was truly inspiring. We’re thrilled that our work contributes to sharing this world-changing story for generations to come.

The Ryedale Hoard at the Yorkshire Museum, a remarkable collection of Roman treasures that offered visitors a rare glimpse into ancient Britain's past...

"I loved the narrative the The Yorkshire Museum team created for this project. By framing it as a mystery, they introduced visitors to a fascinating cast of characters and different theories about who might have buried the hoard. The Roman treasures were revealed in a dramatic moment, inviting everyone to draw their own conclusions about the story behind the find. It was such an engaging concept to bring to life, and it worked so well that the exhibition’s run was extended."

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum is a 5 star museum in the heart of Stirling Castle, which tells the fascinating story of the regiment through objects, images and sounds in a series of themed rooms…

“With Sutherland as my middle name, working on the redevelopment of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ Museum at Stirling Castle felt extra special. Helping to open up more of the historic King’s Building rooms to visitors, in such an incredible castle, was a real privilege and it’s something I’m still really proud of.”

Step into Standish’s past, and see it through fresh eyes.

This weekend, as part of Heritage Open Days, St Wilfrid’s Church will host the launch of The Story of Standish exhibition. It’s been brought to life by PLB in collaboration with Floreo Heritage and the brilliant pupils of Standish Community High School.

Together, we’ve uncovered the stories of the village and its people. All woven into one remarkable exhibition featuring community voices, local heritage and the perspectives of a new generation.

This exhibition is proof of the magic that happens when local voices join together, allowing heritage to really come alive.

Royal Armouries, the UK’s national museum of arms and armour, is one of the world’s leading institutions of its kind…

“I love working with the Royal Armouries. It’s been such a unique chance to combine my creative work with my interest in historical combat. Through competitive fencing and a recent jousting experience day, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation of the craft, skill and heritage behind the collection, something that inspires me to help bring their fascinating displays to life.”

Holocaust Centre North promotes education on the Holocaust and post-Holocaust issues to raise awareness of human rights, freedom, and equality. Telling a global history through local stories, specifically those of survivors and refugees who rebuilt their lives in the North of England…

“This was a deeply moving and thought-provoking project to be part of. The most powerful moment came when I worked with the client team to choose images for the graphic panels and was told that some of the photographs showed her own family members arriving at a N**i death camp. It was incredibly emotional. Seeing how strongly some of the graphics affected people has made this one of the most unforgettable projects I’ve worked on.”

Winding through nine locks, Pocklington Canal begins at Canal Head near Pocklington and joins the River Derwent at East Cottingwith in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Once threatened, the canal was saved by energetic local volunteers and campaigners, and is now home to three Sites of Special Scientific Interest…

“I grew up in 1980s Birmingham, when canals meant shopping trolleys and old bikes. Visiting Pocklington Canal was a revelation, crystal-clear water, lily pads and wildlife everywhere. At around 25 miles it’s no quick walk, but without doubt one of the most beautiful site visits I’ve had with PLB.”

Inspiring the Next Generation for International Youth Day, with a Creative Twist...

Year 9 pupils from Standish Community High School brought the ideas and the energy, when our senior graphic designer, Susanne Mead, recently led them in a creative workshop.

The session kicked off with a dive into the history of Standish and St Wilfrid’s from Beth Farrelly of Floreo Heritage. From there, Susanne pulled back the curtain on life as a designer, including what makes interpretation graphics come to life, and how to turn a story into strong imagery that people just can’t stop looking at.

Then came the magic: pupils putting theory into practice, crafting their own graphic panels. The results? Creative, thoughtful and worthy of the spotlight, which is exactly where they’re headed in an exhibition at St Wilfrid’s later this year, coordinated by the PLB team.

Susanne summed it up perfectly:

“Working with such enthusiastic students and watching their creativity develop throughout the day was a real privilege, and a reminder of the importance of inspiring the next generation of designers. Which I can safely say, is looking spectacular!”

Here’s to curiosity, creativity and the next wave of design talent.

Is it a bird? A plane? Or something stranger? 👽

It’s World UFO Day so it's a good time to look up… and look back.

East Anglia has long been a hotbed for unexplained aerial sightings. From RAF Bentwaters to the Rendlesham Forest incident, the region’s skies have inspired both wonder and speculation. But long before flying saucers entered the public imagination, something equally extraordinary was already in the air… radar.

At Bawdsey, on the Suffolk coast, history was being made. The world’s first operational radar station helped change the course of WWII and laid the groundwork for modern air defence and surveillance. Today, Bawdsey Radar continues to share that remarkable legacy.

We’ve been proud to work alongside the Bawdsey Radar Trust to design and deliver an exhibition inside the historic transmitter block, the very building where these pioneering discoveries took place. Supported by NLHF funding, our interpretation brings to life the stories of innovation, secrecy and the people behind it all.

Whether it’s UFOs or the unseen power of radio waves, Bawdsey reminds us how much there still is to discover above our heads.

Bekonscot Model Village & Railway is the world’s oldest original model village, opening for the first time in 1929...

“Bringing the inhabitants of the model village to life as life-sized cut-outs, alongside scaled-up scenes from the model railway, was enormous fun! A great way to help children understand the concept of scale. As a bonus, I even had the chance to recreate a murder scene from Midsomer Murders – Bekonscot was one of the filming locations!"

Yesterday evening, Susanne and Jim had the privilege of attending the VIP reception and private view of Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum at the Royal Armouries Leeds.

This compelling and immersive exhibition brings the world of ancient Rome vividly to life, from rare Roman artefacts to the powerful stories of the gladiators themselves. With plenty of hands-on fun, they couldn’t resist the chance to try out being gladiators too!

It was a pleasure to support this exciting new visitor experience by producing the exhibition graphics, trail leaflets and family-friendly helmet activity sheets.

Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum is open to the public from 28 June to 2 November 2025, it’s not to be missed!
