🐴 IF ONLY THEY COULD TELL US! 😂

Scientists in Norway have taught horses to use signs to tell us whether they want their rugs ON, OFF or LEFT ALONE!

Imagine how much easier life would be…

🐴 “Rug on, please.”

🐴 “Actually, I’m a bit warm now.”

🐴 “Changed my mind. Rug back on.”

🐴 “And while you’re at it, could you get that one washed? It’s filthy.” 🙄

We suspect some horses would change their minds more often than the weather! 🌦️

🐴 WHEN IT’S TIME FOR A NEW RUG…

We love repairing rugs and giving them a new lease of life, but sometimes even we have to admit when a rug has reached the end of the road! 🧵🪡

So, how do you know when it’s time to replace rather than repair?

🔎 The outer fabric is becoming thin or brittle
If the material is worn across large areas, repairs may simply create another weak point nearby.

💧 It’s no longer keeping your horse dry
Reproofing can help maintain a rug’s water resistance, but it can’t compensate for fabric or membranes that have deteriorated beyond repair.

🪡 There are multiple large tears or repeated repairs
A good repair can extend the life of a rug considerably, but eventually the cost and extent of repairs may outweigh the value of the rug.

🐴 The fit has changed
Stretched necklines, damaged fastenings or a rug that continually slips can cause rubbing and discomfort. A well-fitting rug should sit securely without restricting movement.

⚙️ Straps, buckles and fittings are failing in several places
One broken fitting is an easy fix. When numerous components and their attachment points are worn, it can be a sign that the whole rug is nearing the end of its useful life.

✨ Sometimes it’s simply had a very good innings!
Horse rugs take a serious amount of punishment. Mud, rain, rolling, rubbing and the occasional determined attempt to destroy them!

At SG Equine Laundry, we’ll always repair a rug where it’s practical to do so. But if we think a rug has reached the point where further repairs aren’t worthwhile, we’ll tell you.

Because sometimes the best thing you can do for an old rug… is retire it! 🐴💚

🐴 WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO WASH & REPROOF YOUR HORSE RUGS

A turnout rug has an important job,keeping your horse warm, dry and protected from the elements. But over time, dirt, sweat, grease and mud build up, while the rug’s water-repellent finish can become less effective.

A dirty, wet or poorly waterproofed rug isn’t just unpleasant , it can affect your horse’s comfort too.

🌧️ Loss of waterproofing
When a rug starts absorbing water rather than repelling it, it becomes heavy and can leave your horse cold and damp underneath.

🐴 Skin irritation
Built up sweat, grease, dirt and bacteria sitting against the coat can contribute to rubbing and skin irritation.

🦠 Damp, dirty rugs are harder to keep fresh
Repeatedly putting a damp, dirty rug back onto your horse creates an environment where bacteria and fungi can thrive.

✨ Regular professional washing and reproofing helps your rugs perform as they should, keeping them clean, breathable and weather-resistant, while helping them last longer.

If your turnout rug is soaking up the rain rather than letting it bead and run off, it could be time for a wash and reproof.
