We need to do the same. Reforestation now.
A Colombian city cooled by about 3.6°F (2°C) by planting millions of trees and other plants.
Medellín’s Green Corridors project transformed roadsides, parks, riverbanks, and transport routes into connected green spaces. The city planted around 2.5 million plants and 880,000 trees, helping reduce urban heat through shade and evapotranspiration.
The project also improved air quality, reduced runoff, supported wildlife, and created more pleasant public spaces.
Medellín shows how nature-based solutions can help cities become cooler, healthier, and more resilient as global temperatures rise.
