“The wind, which blew against me yesterday, and drove me into the harbour of Malsesine, was the cause of a perilous adventure, which I got over with good humour, and the remembrance of which I still find amusing. According to my plan, I went early in the morning into the old castle, which having neither gate nor guard, is accessible to everybody.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Italian Journey (1816 & 1817)
🏰 The castle with neither gate nor guard that Goethe speaks of is the Castello Scaligero in Malcesine, perched above the north-eastern shore of Lake Garda. From its beginnings in the Middle Ages, it was dominated over the following centuries by the Venetians, French and Austrians, with each new wave of rulers adding buildings and internal structures.
💡 The castle’s ancient history is enhanced by the new lighting design by , with great respect for the site and surrounding landscape.
💡 Compact Ginko 1.0 projectors, in an anthracite finish, are installed beneath the handrails on the parapets to become an integral part of the castle’s architecture. At night, their soft light illuminates those same paths trodden by Goethe and witnesses to over a millennium and a half of history.
