Regain Energy, Park College

Designing this clubhouse, I kept returning to one idea.
A place to regain energy.

In Hong Kong, life moves quickly.
The city is dense. Efficient. Always in motion.

Moments to slow down are rare.

So we imagined a space where the body can move.
And the mind can gradually settle.
Yoga in the morning.

Boxing or training during the day.
Reading quietly as evening arrives.

Sometimes architecture is simple.
Just a place to reset.
And begin again.

Feeling hemmed in by Covid restrictions several years ago, Alan Lau toyed with swapping his family’s Mid-Levels flat for the laid-back way of life he had enjoyed in Brisbane, Australia, where he had worked decades earlier and still has business interests.⁠

His wife, Lydia, having studied in Sydney, understood the attraction.⁠
⁠
However, not wishing to transplant their two adolescent children and leave a large extended family behind, the couple reached a compromise. As much as possible, they’d try to replicate in Hong Kong the relaxed lifestyle synonymous with Australia.⁠
⁠
A three-storey attached house in Tai Wai, complete with outdoor terrace and pool, hit the mark. With 2,100 sq ft of internal space to work with, plus an outdoor area of about 1,200 sq ft, Ivan Wong Wei-him, architect, designer and founder of In-between Architects (), would realise the couple’s vision during a year-long renovation, completed in May 2024.⁠

“In our design, we balance stone and textile for a dynamic feel in ground level, while wood and leathers bring comfort to private spaces on the upper level. By blending natural elements such as raw stone finishes, furniture in organic shape, sunset tone colours, and textures, we create lasting, visually appealing spaces that promote relaxation and warmth throughout the house.”

This design sets the stage for the owner’s art, furniture, and family gatherings. Our goal is to create spaces where memorable events can unfold. Every part of this carefully crafted space reflects our belief in simplicity and harmony, inviting guests to enjoy a seamless blend of art, nature, and essential living.”
