Established in 2017, HULS Gallery Duxton Hill was the first HULS Gallery to open its doors, marking the beginning of our journey to share the beauty of Japanese crafts with the world.

Today, HULS Gallery operates three locations across Singapore, with Duxton Hill serving as our flagship gallery. The Timeless Beauty of Ko-Shigaraki

Ceramic artist Q Tani draws inspiration from Ko-Shigaraki, the medieval tradition of Shigaraki ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.

This Shigaraki matcha bowl reveals a beautiful natural gradient, shifting from light ochre to deep, rusty orange towards its base. Its unglazed, high-fired surface bears a dry, weathered texture and subtle iron spots, evoking the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi.

Through wood-firing in a traditional ana-gama kiln, Tani brings out the rich character of Shigaraki clay, allowing earth and fire to create a nuanced, timeless expression. Rooted in the spirit of ancient Shigaraki ceramics, the bowl carries a quiet presence that resonates with contemporary sensibilities.

陶瓷藝術家谷穹(Q Tani)從古信樂燒中汲取靈感，古信樂燒是日本六大古窯之一，也是中世紀信樂燒的傳統工藝。

Red Killifish — A Playful Expression of Arita Ware

The beloved Red Killifish series by Riso Porcelain brings a playful charm to the refined tradition of Arita ware.

Tiny red medaka, or Japanese killifish, are delicately hand-painted across the porcelain, appearing to swim gently around each vessel. The lively motif lends warmth and character to the clean forms, creating tableware that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in the craftsmanship of Arita.

The collection includes teapots, houhin, plates and other vessels for everyday use, each bringing a quiet sense of delight to the table.

Riso Porcelain 備受喜愛的紅鱂魚系列，為精緻的有田燒傳統注入了一抹趣味盎然的魅力。

Q Tani’s Yon Soku-Hei (Four-Footed Vessel) is crafted from slip-coated Shigaraki clay and wood-fired in a traditional anagama kiln.

Its four wheel-thrown legs are carefully joined to the main body, creating a sculptural form that balances architectural precision with the warmth of handwork. The deep black surface, enriched by subtle traces of firing, lends the vessel a quiet and timeless presence.

Autumn Days in Suzu

With the first hints of autumn in the air, HULS Gallery founder Yusuke Shibata travelled to Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture, to visit Suzu ware artists.

Over two days, we encountered the history of this distinctive ceramic tradition and the craftsmanship that continues to sustain it today. Beyond the works themselves, the journey offered time to experience the landscape, climate and quiet atmosphere of the Noto Peninsula—the environment in which the craft has taken root and evolved.

At HULS Gallery, we believe that understanding Kogei means looking beyond the object to the land, culture and people behind it. These roots remain an essential part of the stories we hope to share.

珠洲的秋日

秋意漸濃之際，HULS Gallery創辦人柴田先生前往石川縣珠洲市，拜訪珠洲燒陶藝家。

在為期兩天的旅程中，我們深入了解了這項獨特陶瓷傳統的歷史，以及至今仍傳承至今的精湛工藝。除了欣賞陶藝作品本身，這趟旅程也讓我們有機會體驗能登半島的自然風光、氣候和寧靜氛圍—珠洲燒陶藝正是在這片土地上生根發芽、不斷發展。

Ceramic artist Q Tani explores the spirit of medieval Ko-Shigaraki through his practice in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns.

Echoes of Ko-Shigaraki

Ceramic artist Q Tani draws inspiration from Ko-Shigaraki, the Shigaraki ware of the medieval period. Through yakishime firing in an ana-gama, he pursues the beauty and spirit embodied in these ancient vessels.

His Uzukumaru and Heishi reveal a distinctive pale, almost white expression. Quiet yet powerful, their surfaces bear the traces of earth and fire, allowing the presence of Ko-Shigaraki to gently re-emerge in the present.

古信樂燒的迴響

陶藝家谷穹(Q Tani)從古信樂燒－中世紀的信樂燒－汲取靈感。他採用穴窯燒製法，力求重現這些古老器皿所蘊含的美感與精神。

Amber on Gray – Colors in Quiet Harmony

Based in Toyama Prefecture, glass artist Takeyoshi Mitsui is known for his distinctive sense of color and his pursuit of softness and warmth within the inherently hard material of glass.

In his Amber on Gray series, layers of amber and gray glass overlap, creating subtle gradations of color and depth. The amount and placement of amber vary from piece to piece, allowing each vessel to reveal a unique expression as light passes through the glass.

A selection of Amber on Gray vases by Takeyoshi Mitsui is now available through the HULS Gallery Hong Kong Online Store.

Takoh-Hei – A Sculptural Expression of Shigaraki

Created by Q Tani, a ceramic artist based in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, Takoh-Hei (Multi-Neck Vessel) reflects his deep exploration of the spirit of Ko-Shigaraki.

Crafted from Shigaraki clay, the vessel is slip-coated and wood-fired in an anagama kiln. Its double-layered structure and natural fissures reveal the powerful traces of earth and fire, while the broad, planar silhouette evokes the form of a gorintō, a traditional Japanese five-element pagoda.

Tani has devoted his practice to yakishime—high-fired, unglazed stoneware—taking the jars and vessels of Muromachi-period Ko-Shigaraki as an enduring source of inspiration. In Takoh-Hei, this ancient sensibility is transformed into a distinctly contemporary, sculptural presence.

Quiet yet commanding, the work brings a sense of stillness and timelessness to the space around it.

多頸瓶－信樂燒的雕塑表達

多頸瓶（Takoh-Hei）由居住於滋賀縣信樂市的陶藝家谷穹(Q Tani)創作，體現了他對古信樂燒精神的深刻探索。

此瓶以信樂燒陶土為原料，經泥漿塗裝後，在穴窯中柴燒而成。其雙層結構和天然裂縫展現了泥土與火焰的強烈痕跡，而寬闊的平面輪廓則令人聯想到五輪塔，日本傳統的五行寶塔。
