Natural Lava

Natural lava is the most direct form of the material.
It is not glazed. Not corrected. Not made predictable. It keeps visible the marks of cooling, cutting, mechanical processing, and time.

Porosity, mineral inclusions, tonal variations, subtle discontinuities — these are not imperfections to eliminate. They are the consequence of reality. Each slab behaves differently because the starting matter is never identical to itself.

Working with natural lava means accepting that:
• absolute uniformity is not the goal
• the surface cannot be fully controlled
• the material carries memory

For Ranieri, natural lava is not “raw” in need of refinement.
It is a material that speaks plainly of its origin. It asks for competence, attention, and respect for its intrinsic limits — in design and in use.

In return, it offers an essential presence: primary, physical, unfiltered.

Glazed Lava

Glazed lava is where a primordial stone meets a complex transformation.
Colour is not applied like a coat — it reacts, fuses, and changes with the lava during high-temperature firing.

This is not decoration. It is chemistry.
Lava, glaze, temperature, and time enter into a real reaction — and reactions create variation: in tone, depth, reflection, density, and behaviour under light. These are not defects. They are consequences.

For Ranieri, glaze is not a correction.
Glaze is a relationship.

A relationship that:
• accepts unpredictability as part of the work
• understands that uniform perfection is incompatible with living matter
• requires technical control without denying variability

Glazed lava is an expressive surface.
It is sensitive to light, distance, and context. It changes with time and with the gaze. Colour does not dominate as an absolute — it dialogues with what lies beneath.

Recycled Lava

Recycled lava begins where production would normally end.
Fragments, powders, irregular parts, processing waste — elements that cannot be “made compliant” under traditional expectations.

Ranieri does not treat them as errors.
Ranieri treats them as still-active matter — with a different kind of potential.

Here, imperfection is not a side effect.
It is the starting point. Discontinuity, stratification, density changes, visual fragmentation — these do not need to be hidden. They become declared composition.

For Ranieri, recycling is not a rhetorical answer to sustainability.
It is a cultural choice: accepting loss of control as part of material language. The project does not restore order — it gives meaning to fragmentation.

Recycled lava does not imitate stability.

Born from the synergy between, Studio Furthermore, Modhern and Ranieri Lava stone , this collection of side tables hand-carved from lava stone surface sourced from 🇮🇹 active volcanoes is a tribute to living, ever-evolving matter.

Each piece merges rough volumes and chiseled details with intensely glazed surfaces, creating a striking contrast.

The collection is available in Low, Mid, and Side Table versions, each representing a visionary take on the design of tomorrow.

Founded by Marina Dragomirova and Iain Howlett, Studio Furthermore is known for its exploration of new aesthetic codes through material research and natural processes.

At Ranieri Lava Stone, the power of nature meets the artistry of Italian craftsmanship.
Each piece is a unique creation, blending volcanic beauty with timeless design.

The volcano—a mountain with fire inside—holds that same power. It attracts without any obvious reason. It’s both physical threat and aesthetic promise: it might destroy, or dazzle, or both. That’s surely one reason why so many creatives orbit around Ranieri. Designers, artists, musicians, photographers, writers. All gathered around the fire in the night.

Lava shares the same nature as creativity. It emerges from dark depths, impossible to predict when or why. At first, it’s formless—but it can take on any imaginable shape. To tame and mold it takes skill and study. In this sense, Ranieri doesn’t just craft lava artifacts—it is lava. Rather than control creativity, it lets it erupt and cool into endless formations.
