When I first saw this photo on IG story, I was instantly amazed. She kindly shared it with me—huge shoutout to her (you should definitely check out her work!). This image became the inspiration behind the “Midnight Sun” glaze I used on my katakuchi matcha bowl in the second batch, December 2024.
I immediately knew that when the green matcha flows against the bowl, it would create a striking contrast with the orange glaze. The black glaze adds a bold touch, tying it all together.
Whenever I design something, I always remember what my professor once said:
“Never look for inspiration from items that are the same as yours—you’ll only end up copying someone else’s work.”
That really stuck with me.
It’s not easy, especially since we’re constantly surrounded by similar pieces. That’s why I mute most pottery artists whose styles are close to mine—to avoid unintentionally copying them. Of course, there are potters I deeply admire, and they know it—because I always reach out, give credit, and let them know when something I made was inspired by their work.
Designing is hard. That’s why giving credit matters.
So if you ever feel inspired by something I made—I don’t mind at all, I'm actually happy. Just be kind and talk to me. Let’s respect the process and the effort behind every piece.
