This lathe back chair was in much worse condition than the photos show. Rotten sections, everything loose and falling apart, dodgy previous repairs, etc. But it was enjoyable to restore as it involved quite a few different skills. A new curved lathe (back splat) had to be made from a big block of beech, along with turning a new bobbin dowel on my new cheapo second hand lathe, splicing in a new section of beech to the bottom of one back support, plus the usual knocking it all apart, regluing, sanding, cleaning, finishing, blending in and colouring etc.
One very happy customer though.

Just realised I forgot to add one bit to the top, so here’s a photo with the curvy bit added above the mirror 😀

This massive transformation involved pretty much every part of restoration. A family heirloom that had been left in a barn. Woodworm, rotten wood, missing handles, missing feet, missing shelves, missing edge mouldings, missing spindles, wood turning, replacing panels, splicing in new wood, sourcing feet and handles, swollen wood so doors don’t fit, missing drawer supports…I could go on and on…and that’s before fully stripping off layers of assorted brown gunk and varnish, sanding, french polishing and waxing. A good learning experience though 😀

A slightly unusual restoration of a child’s chair heirloom. My customer wanted it restored to pass onto her young grandchildren. Fixed up over the years by her father with stickers, string, glue, layers of varnish etc, it now had broken spindles and legs (under the string). I wanted to preserve all the old repairs and decoration by the (now) great grandfather, but make it rock solid and safe. So spindles were replaced or repaired and reset, string was carefully pealed back and legs fixed properly, my repairs aged and coloured, then the whole given a very light polish.
So, not a ‘wow what a difference’-type restoration, but with tricky moments nonetheless, and my customer was delighted.
