🌾Harvest Time: Preparing Your 2027 Wildflower Meadow This September & October
Sep is associated with harvest and gathering in what the land has produced and beginning to prepare for the seasons ahead. And while most of us think of spring when we think of sowing, autumn can also be an excellent time to begin a wildflower meadow.
If you’re hoping for a beautiful display of native Irish annual wildflowers in summer 2027 the work can start now. September and into October are ideal months for clearing and preparing the ground and depending on your soil, you are able to sow the seeds this autumn.
🌱Light, sandy or free-draining soil?
Autumn sowing can work particularly well. These soils drain more freely through winter, reducing the risk of seeds and young seedlings sitting in saturated ground.
Seed sown in autumn can take advantage of the remaining warmth in the soil with some germinating before winter and others waiting until conditions improve in spring.
Autumn sowing can also result in an earlier display of flowers the following summer.
💧Heavy, clay-rich or boggy ground?
Use autumn to prepare the area, but consider waiting until spring to sow.Heavy and poorly draining soils can remain cold and wet throughout the winter here in Ireland. Waiting until spring can help reduce the risk of waterlogging and young seedlings failing before they become established.
Preparing the ground
Choose an open sunny area and remove existing grass, weeds and unwanted vegetation. Wildflower seed needs good contact with bare soil and will struggle if simply scattered into established grass. Rake the surface to create a fine seedbed, remove persistent weeds and larger stones, then firm the soil ready for sowing. When you do sow scatter the seed evenly and press it gently into the surface. Wildflower seed should generally sit close to the soil surface rather than being deeply buried.
Avoid sowing when the ground is frozen, waterlogged or extremely dry.
