Rare Icon of Saint Spyridion
19th Century on wood panel. 18.7cm x 13.5cm

The incorrupt relics of Saint Spyridon are housed in the Church of Saint Spyridon in Corfu, Greece, where they are on display for veneration. The body was found to be incorrupt when it was first moved from Cyprus to Constantinople in the 7th century and was again transferred to Corfu in the 15th century to escape Ottoman rule. The incorrupt relics are also known for the claim that Saint Spyridon’s silken slippers wear out from his journeys to help people, a sign of his ongoing intercession.

Exceptionally rare pair of 19th Century Pietra Dura panels preserving 16th Century oval miniature paintings on vellum. The oval portraits depict a Crowned Madonna and Archangel Michael under glass with brass.
Provenance: from the content of Castle Racconigi, near Turin, the last private residence of King Umberto II of Italy, the very last sitting King of Italy. On the reverse inventory numbers corresponding to the contents of the castle (and inscription). Provenance and acquisition from a top tier Paris auction house.

Outer carved wood gilded frame.
