If you jumped on the millennial grey trend 10–15 years ago and now your grey kitchen, flooring or tiles are feeling cold and dated, don’t panic – you don’t need to rip everything out just yet!

I’m Michelle Fox, an interior designer based in West Cork, and I’d love it if you’d give me a follow for more practical interior design tips and colour advice.

Grey is a cool colour, so the trick is to pair it with something warmer to bring balance back into the room.

Three great options are:

A warm taupe like Watch House by Colourtrend – this adds warmth without clashing with your existing grey finishes.

Or a muted pink like Peignoir by Farrow & Ball – it has a soft grey undertone, so it sits beautifully beside grey while adding warmth and personality, and not sugary.

Or A rich golden tone like Treacle Pudding by Colourtrend – mustard and golden shades work beautifully with grey, adding warmth, depth and a much more contemporary feel to the space.

Sometimes a simple paint change is all it takes to make a grey room feel current again.

As always, test samples in your own space before making a final decision. Natural light, room orientation, and existing finishes can all affect how a colour looks in your home.

Delighted to attend Bloom 2026 this year with my Mam, as we both absolutely love gardens and crafts. We spent the day in Dublin yesterday and had such a lovely time wandering around all the beautiful displays.

There was so much to see and enjoy – the stunning show gardens, talented artists and makers, inspiring garden talks, gorgeous food, and so much creativity everywhere you looked. It was one of those days where you leave feeling full of ideas and inspiration.

A special thank you to for the prize and for the beautiful print I got to take home. I absolutely love it and it will always remind me of a wonderful day spent in Bloom with my Mam. ❤️🌸🌿

I’ve been meaning to get this one out of my head and onto paper. The joys of being a visual person means I can picture a space before it exists, but I do have to do the drawings if I ever want anyone else to know what the plan is!

Looking forward to bringing this one to life.

I attended the Network Ireland West Cork businesswomen’s awards last night in with .

From start to finish, it was such a fantastic night! MC couldn’t have done a better job, she was amazing and so funny!

I got to speak with OBE during dinner who is an absolute powerhouse in business, and such a lovely lady.

The fabulous Trish gave us tips on our manners and etiquette for dinner.

Amazing food by !

Congrats to Anna our president, Susan .ie our Vice president and to all the committee for organizing a fantastic and fun event, with laughs throughout the night!!

Do you remember magnolia in Irish homes?
It was everywhere!! People used it because it made a home feel warm and cosy.

But you’ll be glad to know, warm colours don’t always mean beige or Magnolia.

You can create warmth and depth in your home through much more modern, calming tones too, such as:

• Olive greens — grounding, earthy and connected to nature. I love Colourtrend’s Sweet Caper.

• Earthy pinks — soft, comforting and flattering in Irish light such as Farrow and Ball’s Sulking Room Pink.

• Mushroom tones — warm neutrals that add depth without feeling yellow. Check out Aluna by Colourtrend.

When you’re designing any space, the first two steps are so important— and most people skip them.

Step one is the layout.
Before you think about colours, sofas, or styling, you need to understand how the room works. Where is the natural flow? Where will people sit, walk, and gather? The layout is about function first — positioning your key pieces like the sofa, chairs, and TV in a way that feels natural and balanced. If the layout is off, no amount of styling will fix it.

Step two is the lighting.
Lighting completely changes how a space feels. You should always layer it — think ambient (your main light), task (like reading lamps), and accent (to create mood). The goal is to avoid relying on one harsh overhead light and instead create a warm, inviting atmosphere that can shift depending on the time of day.

Get these two right, and everything else — colour, furniture, finishes — becomes so much easier and more elevated.

Before you pick a colour—look at this first as it will completely change how your room feels.

…Which direction your room faces.

If it’s north-facing, the light is naturally cooler… more grey, more shadowed, and it can make colours feel a bit flat or cold.

So in those rooms, you want to bring warmth in.
Think warmer neutrals, soft creams, earthy tones… colours with depth and warmth in them.

Because they balance out that cool light and make the space feel comfortable and lived in.

If your room is south-facing, it’s the opposite.

You’ve got warm, bright light all day, so everything already feels lighter and warmer.

So you can actually go for slightly cooler tones because they stop the room feeling too warm or too yellow.

And when you’ve chosen your colour, don’t just look at it once.

Check it in natural light throughout the day… morning, afternoon, evening… because it shifts constantly.

And then look at it in artificial light as well—lamps, ceiling lights—because that’s when you really see how it lives in the space.

So it’s never just about the colour you choose…it’s about how it behaves in your light.
