The Spark Issue 34 is out ⚡

We are closed today and tomorrow, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd, following a bereavement in the family. Thanks for bearing with us.

We are open Friday 23rd, 7am to 5pm, and that is the only day to collect before we are back on Tuesday 27th, because we are closed Saturday, Sunday and the bank holiday Monday.

Also in this issue: the Finance Bill is out and the four fuel excise dates are finally set, a €24,409 fine for posing as a registered contractor, and a trap in the new battery grant that could cost somebody a job.

The Spark Issue 33 is out ⚡

Today was the day the carbon tax on home heating oil was supposed to jump. It didn’t, because the Budget cancelled it. But heating oil still went up €31 per 500 litres in the last week alone, which is more than the tax cut was worth.

Also in this issue: the Finance Bill is still not published so the diesel excise dates remain unknown, housing fell again in the September figures, and bulkheads take the spotlight with the clocks going back on Sunday week.

The Current Issue 18 is out ⚡

Budget 2027 brought no energy credit. It did bring three grant changes that opened on Tuesday, and most of the Budget coverage missed them because they were not Budget measures at all.

In this month's issue:
- A new €600 grant for a home battery, worth about €137 a year
- €2,000 to scrap an old oil or kerosene boiler, on top of the heat pump grant
- Solar grants now open to homes built and occupied before 2025. A lot of newer houses were shut out before
- Fuel Allowance up €5 to €43 a week from January, and more pensioners will qualify
- Carbon tax on home heating oil and gas cut and frozen. Solid fuel goes up on May 1st

One catch worth knowing: your grant has to be approved before any work starts.

The Spark Issue 32 is out ⚡ Budget special.

No tax increase at the pump or in the tank this winter. The carbon tax on kerosene and gas was cut, not just frozen, and held there to 2030. The fuel excise cuts now run to the end of February instead of expiring on 1 November.

The battery and solar grants opened at 5pm yesterday. And the one nobody is reporting: business microgeneration, heat pumps and solar thermal have jumped to 45% of eligible costs, for nine months only.

The Spark Issue 31 is out ⚡

A €600 grant for home battery storage goes live on Budget day next Tuesday, and the €1,800 solar grant now reaches homes built before 2025. There's €2,000 boiler scrappage coming in the new year too. All of it is work for registered electricians.

The Spark Issue 30 is out ⚡

Planning permissions jumped 60% last quarter, the best in nearly five years, with apartments up 107%. The catch: more than 41,000 approved Dublin apartments still have no shovel in the ground.
