💡 OUTDOOR SECURITY LIGHTS, WHAT MOST HOMES GET WRONG

The evenings are already pulling in, and this is the week most people start thinking about that dark patch at the side of the house.

🔦 One massive floodlight on the gable is not security lighting. It creates glare, throws deep shadow right beside it, and gives your camera less to work with rather than more.

🏠 Two or three smaller fittings covering the drive, the side passage and the back door will do far more than one big lamp ever will.

🐈 If your light fires forty times a night, the sensor is nearly always mounted too low or turned up too high. Around two metres up, angled so people cross its view rather than walk straight into it, and the cats lose interest fairly quickly.

☔ IP65 or better for anything on an exposed wall. Irish weather finds the weak point in anything less.

⚡ Anything wired into the mains needs a Registered Electrical Contractor under Safe Electric. Solar and battery you can put up yourself with a drill and a ladder.

Full guide is live on the site now, covering the four types worth buying, how many watts each position actually needs, and how to set a sensor so it behaves.

⚡ The Spark #025 is out.

Last Wednesday's solar eclipse dropped Ireland's solar output from over 500 megawatts to just 8, and EirGrid had to fire up the Tarbert emergency plant for the first time ever. Solar is now big enough to swing the national grid, and that changes the battery conversation on every domestic install.

The Current Issue 11 is out ⚡

Where your electricity bill actually goes, and what the CSO figures mean for households
Why the energy credit has been ruled out for Budget 2027, with a record 322,000 households now behind on their bills
How to get ahead of the dark evenings before they arrive
