Found a fabric you love for a chair or sofa?

Before making the decision, it's worth checking whether it's actually suitable for upholstery.

Some fabrics are designed for curtains and won't necessarily stand up to everyday use on a favourite armchair. Others are made specifically with durability in mind.

The weave, composition, cleaning instructions and abrasion rating are all worth considering, particularly for furniture that gets a lot of use.

And if you're recovering a much-loved piece, it's worth taking a little extra time to get the fabric right.

A beautiful fabric is one thing. A beautiful fabric that works for the job is even better.

Some fabrics are beautiful without demanding too much attention.
Colefax and Fowler has always been particularly good at this. Delicate florals, subtle stripes, lovely textures and colours that sit comfortably alongside one another.

There’s plenty of pattern in the collections, but much of it is surprisingly easy to work with, particularly if you prefer a more traditional interior without wanting everything to feel overly formal.
If you haven't looked through the Colefax and Fowler books recently, they're well worth another visit.

Osborne & Little has never been particularly afraid of colour.
That’s probably one of the reasons we enjoy seeing what they come up with each season.
There are bold prints and wallpapers, of course, but also some really good textures, geometrics and quieter designs that can get overlooked beside the showstoppers.

The new collections are arriving now and we’ve been having a look through what’s coming for autumn.
We’ll share a few of our favourites over the next couple of weeks.

It’s very easy to fall in love with a fabric when you’re looking at a small sample.
But with a patterned fabric, it’s always worth stepping back and looking at the full repeat.
A large botanical can look completely different across a pair of curtains than it does on a small piece of fabric. The same goes for a stripe, where the width and direction can change how you see the proportions of a window.

That doesn’t make large patterns difficult to use. Quite the opposite.
You just need to see enough of the fabric before making the decision.

This is one of those occasions when the sample book really does matter.

October does make us look at fabrics a little differently.
Suddenly the heavier weaves, velvets and deeper colours start looking particularly good.
Not necessarily the obvious autumn colours either. Deep greens, to***co, plum, rust and inky blues can all bring warmth to a room without making it feel overly seasonal.
This Linwood velvet caught our eye for exactly that reason.
Maybe the change in weather has something to do with it.

We love looking through the new collections online, but fabric is one of those things that really needs to be seen in person.

Colour can look completely different on a screen. And you can’t see how a linen catches the light, how a velvet changes as you move it, or how a fabric actually feels.

That’s why we still have shelves and shelves of books in the showroom.

Sometimes you need to pull a few out, put them together and see what happens.

We spend a lot of time choosing the fabric for a curtain, but what goes behind it matters too.

The right lining can change how a curtain hangs, help protect the face fabric and make a real difference to light and insulation.

Blackout isn’t always the answer either. Sometimes a good quality standard or interlining is exactly what the room needs.

It’s one of those decisions you don’t really see when the curtains are finished, but you certainly notice the difference.

There’s a point around now when you suddenly notice the evenings drawing in.

Lamps are on earlier, curtains are being closed again and the rooms we barely thought about during the summer start feeling important.

It’s often when people begin looking at their homes a little differently too.

A new pair of curtains, recovering a favourite chair or finally doing something with that room you’ve been ignoring all summer.

Does everything in a room have to match?

We'd say no.

In fact, rooms can become much more interesting when things aren't quite so coordinated.

A stripe beside a floral. An old chair covered in a new fabric. Something quite traditional next to something much simpler.

The trick is usually finding a connection somewhere. It might be a colour that appears in both fabrics, a similar tone or simply two things that look good together.

If you like them both, put them beside each other and have a look.

You might be surprised.
