One of the reasons I chose Coopershill House for "The Trace of Things" artist and writers retreat is because the landscape itself becomes part of the creative process.

We'll spend time walking through the woodland, along quiet river paths and out into the wider Sligo landscape, taking time to really look. We'll gather ideas through observation, photography, sketchbooks and collecting small fragments that catch our attention.

Rather than arriving with a fixed idea of what to paint, draw, we'll allow the place to guide us. The colours, textures, weather, history and atmosphere of County Sligo will become the starting point for new work. Well also have some time and tutorials with writer Marian Garvey

Sometimes all creativity needs is the time and space to notice.

I can't wait to share this remarkable place with a small group of eight participants this October. Link in bio.

The Trace of Things, artist and writers retreat, Oct 2026, Sligo, Ireland.

"Some of the most valuable pages in my notebooks are the ones that never become finished artworks.

They're filled with random marks, layers of ink and paint, scraps of paper, stitches, staples and experiments that simply ask, "What happens if...?"

A sketchbook isn't about making perfect drawings.
It's a place to notice, to collect, to question and to let ideas grow. Often, the most meaningful work begins long before the first painting.

During The Trace of Things at House this October, we'll use our sketchbooks as a space for observation, experimentation and creative discovery—allowing the remarkable landscape of County Sligo to become part of the process.

This October, I’ll be teaching an intimate week-long art retreat at the extraordinary Coopershill House in County Sligo alongside writer Marian Garvey

“The Trace of Things” is a space for artists, makers, writers and creative thinkers to step away from everyday noise and spend time immersed in landscape, process, experimentation and reflection.

Over the course of the week we’ll explore painting, mixed media, observation, field research, reflective writing and creative conversation — responding to the atmosphere, history and landscape of Sligo and its surroundings.

There will be studio sessions, shared meals, mentoring, field visits, discussion, and quiet space to develop your own work at your own pace.

A week of making, thinking, walking, looking and reconnecting with creative practice in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland.

24–31 October 2026
