Look a little closer🏺

Did you know that the mark on the back of a piece of pottery can tell you a lot about its age?
Claire takes us through two Spode plates and shows how small details in their backstamps can help date them.

Sometimes, the story is in the details.

A little bit of Ireland, found at Harp & Lion 🇮🇪

A few Irish treasures from the shop — from vintage pieces and collectibles to little reminders of Ireland’s history and character.

Ireland, in little things.

Our story started in Bournemouth.

That's where we met while Claire was studying at Bournemouth University. Tony was living in Bournemouth at the time, and had grown up around antiques, as his father was an antique dealer. We quickly discovered that we shared an interest in antiques and collecting, and spent a lot of time exploring antique shops and markets together.

When we moved back to Kerry in 2007, that interest slowly grew into something more. We probably had a little too much stuff, so our first attempt was a pop-up shop.

It went well, and we soon realised that having an antique shop of our own was something we wanted to build together.

Harp & Lion grew organically, one step at a time.

✨ This is where our story begins…

Look closer at the details.

This charming little rocking chair caught our eye for its beautiful turned woodwork, delicate details and patterned fabric.

It’s these small touches of craftsmanship that give older pieces their character — and make you want to stop and take a closer look ✨

We each have our favourite Frenchic colours ❤

Tony’s favourite is Blackjack, while Claire has a few favourites of her own, including Stone Rosie, Funky Dora and especially Constance Moss.

From soft neutrals to vibrant greens, it’s interesting to see how much a colour can change the feel of a piece.

Which one is your favourite?

National Heritage Week is a good time to think about the things that are made to last.

This Victorian dumbwaiter is nearly 150 years old, but it can still have a useful place in a modern home. Good craftsmanship, quality materials and a little imagination can give an old piece a whole new purpose.

That’s one of the things we love about antiques — they’ve already had a life, and there’s no reason they can’t have another.

Some days it's nice to slow down and simply wander.

That's one of our favourite things about the shop. Every shelf, every corner and every little detail has something different waiting to be discovered.

You never quite know what you'll come across next.

We love finding pieces that still have a place in everyday life.

This Victorian stationery box was made to keep letters, pens and writing paper neatly organised. More than a hundred years later, it’s just as handy for bills, notes and all those little bits and pieces that somehow always end up on the kitchen counter.

Some things never really stop being useful.

Sometimes it's the little details that give it away ✨This one turned out to be a 1939 Singer sewing machine. It's amazin...

Sometimes it's the little details that give it away ✨

This one turned out to be a 1939 Singer sewing machine. It's amazing how much craftsmanship you notice when you stop and really look.

How many slides did it take before you guessed it?

Did you know?

Vintage tractors are an important part of Ireland's rural heritage. Across the country, vintage clubs and events bring people together to preserve, restore and showcase old farm machinery.

Just over 100 years ago, tractors were a rare sight in Ireland. By the 1950s, they had fundamentally transformed farming across the
country.

Today, vintage tractors are still valued by collectors and by everyone who appreciates Ireland's farming heritage 🚜
