The Drake Inn – Castletown Geoghegan, Co. Westmeath

The Drake Inn is a traditional village pub on the R389 in Castletown Geoghegan, Co. Westmeath. It is one of the village’s long-established pubs and has been a familiar part of the local streetscape for decades.

The Drake Inn has an interesting place in Irish music history. In 2013, Sinéad O’Connor filmed her music video for “4th and Vine” at the pub, spending the day there during the production. The video was for her album How About I Be Me (And You Be You).

The pub was operated by Andrew Drake when the Westmeath Examiner profiled it during the 2020 COVID-19 restrictions, describing the challenges facing rural wet pubs (those serving only drinks and not food).

Castletown Geoghegan is a small rural village in County Westmeath about 14 km southwest of Mullingar. Its name comes from the Mac Eochagáin (Geoghegan) family, who were the medieval chiefs of the Barony of Moycashel. The village contains some evidence of its medieval past, including a motte-and-bailey and an old graveyard associated with the Geoghegan family.
