I’ve been playing with words recently…
I’ve always loved poetry (I was the weird teen who asked for a special edition of Rilke poems for my 16th birthday 😶), but writing my own always felt too personal, too vulnerable, too „much“.
As someone with ADHD, I experience RSD (rejection sensitive dysphoria), which feels like shame and guilt amplified by 1000 when we feel criticized, rejected or unwanted. It’s a horrible feeling, so many of us develop extensive systems to minimize the risk of experiencing it (yet still, we experience it all the time 🤦♀️).
For me it often means holding back, containing myself, avoiding friction….
Now that I am more aware of my brain and its needs, I am able to acknowledge these barriers and examine which ones serve me (and protect me), and which ones I might slowly try to overcome.
Anyway - all this to say that cut & paste poetry feels like a good way to dip my toes in.
Using words that already exist on a page feels less intimidating, and it’s a fun little scavenger hunt to scan pages and pages for any phrases or words that stand out.
I hope you like this little piece.
Have you ever tried cut & paste poetry? I’d love to know. ❤️
