Summer is here and it’s time to shape the legs.

I set up a jig to taper the legs in the panel saw. All four legs would receive a taper on both inside faces to give a defined silhouette from the front and side views. This design lightens the look of the legs while still giving the strength and support for the main body.
After the legs were clamped and the glue was drying it is time to make finger joints for the drawer components.

Gluing the main body was a 3 hr affair of creating a strategy plan.
Because the are so many components involved it had to be done in steps.

Firstly I used dowels to attach the lower internal frame for the drawer to the base.
Secondly I attached the center frame to the internal panels which was the attached to the back panel.
I then placed the components of the second step into the grooves on the base, inserted the gables into place and finally the placed on the top.
This exercise was dry run a couple of times to make absolutely sure the glued up would go to plan. And it did.

I was never so happy with the therapeutic effect this had on me.

With all the heavy machining down, it’s time to get down to finessing the smaller components.

I used dowel finders to align the internal frames for the drawers to slide in and out on.

I used traditional mortise and tenons joints to attach the legs to the rails for the subframe.

My thinking behind the making and structural integrity for the credenza is traditional joinery such as tongue and groove joints for the main body assembly, mortise and tenons for the subframe and legs. I want to use as little modern materials and mechanisms as possible.

This is where the beautiful facade starts to come together.
My approach for this was to figure out the pattern that worked best together.

Switching and flipping boards till I was satisfied with the level if flow and grain direction.

After I settled on a pattern I indicated the top and bottom before clamping.

It’s coming together.
