I always hope the artwork will speak for itself, perhaps with the title giving just a slight hint or a gentle nudge in the direction that I would like the viewer to explore — just as an invitation, without being attached to whether it is accepted or not.
Personally, I’ve always struggled with the creative process that starts as an idea in the mind, with the visual narrative then following afterwards to illustrate the concept as best as possible. I’ve done this many times while working on commercial projects in my early years and became relatively good at it.
And yet, when the need to follow that structure fell away and I found myself in the open playground of creating the work I actually wanted to create, I discovered that it feels much more natural for me to follow an intuitive visual narrative — often without knowing why I’m drawn to it over a million other possibilities. Then the “why” and the deeper meaning reveal themselves, either during the process or sometimes afterwards, when I switch from being the creator to becoming the viewer.
So I definitely see the value in artistic descriptions displayed next to artworks. They are there as an option for those who want to step closer into the world of the artist and explore that layer, but at the same time, there is so much more that a viewer can receive from an artwork when the visual is experienced through the unique prism of who they are.
In this way, every original creation becomes a collaboration, existing in as many different combinations and flavours as there are people who have experienced the artwork.
The artwork doesn’t end when it leaves the artist’s hands; it continues to live and change depending on who encounters it.
