Why do we cover the challah on Shabbat?
Because while the blessing over bread would usually come first, Shabbat begins with Kiddush. To avoid "embarrassing" the challah while the w**e takes center stage, we cover it until its turn arrives.
A small tradition with a powerful reminder: if we're taught to show respect to bread, imagine how much respect we should show the people around our table.

למה אנחנו מכסים את החלה בשבת?
לפי סדר הברכות, הלחם אמור לקבל את הברכה הראשונה. אבל בשבת, הקידוש על היין קודם לו.
כדי שלא "לבייש" את החלה בזמן שהיין מקבל את מרכז הבמה, אנחנו מכסים אותה עד שמגיע תורה.
