Art is often described as a window into the past, but for those of us in Madhapar, it is the very fabric of our future. As a practitioner of Rogan Art, I am often asked how a 1,550-year-old tradition remains relevant in a world dominated by instant digital gratification.

Rogan art, a 1,550-year-old Indian artistic tradition, translates to “work of color” in Sanskrit. This vibrant art form is characterized by its striking hues, which serve as a defining feature of the technique. Masters in Rogan painting have roots tracing back to the disciples of Buddha.

In Madhapar, a village situated in Bhuj, Kutch, Ashish Kansara has dedicated his life to preserving this unique art. Even in the face of declining demand for traditional crafts, he remains unwavering in his commitment to maintaining the Rogan art form. The technique involves creating paint from castor oil combined with natural pigments, which is then applied to fabric.

Artisans skilled in Rogan art use a thin metal stylus to apply freehand designs, often inspired by elements of nature. Common motifs include birds, flowers, and trees, showcasing the artisans’ deep connection to the environment and heritage.
