The one room nobody thinks to place a carpet in. And yet, a runner in the kitchen changes everything. Something warm beneath your step while the tea brews. Something beautiful in the space that nourishes the home, where meals, and moments are quietly made.

Turns out, art belongs everywhere.

Most people pass over it without a second glance, unaware of what lies beneath their feet. The souf technique stands among the rarest and most exacting expressions in hand-knotted carpet weaving.

In this method, two or more colours are intricately combined within a single knot, a feat that demands exceptional control and artistry. The result is a surface of remarkable depth and quiet luminosity, an effect no machine, no shortcut, and no lesser technique can convincingly achieve.

The pile does not merely reflect light; it responds to it. Hues soften, intensify, and shift as the angle changes, creating a subtle, almost ethereal movement across the field.

Not mere weaving, it is time made visible – patience, discipline, and mastery distilled into every knot.✨

A muted weave against stone and crimson velvet. A washed carpet beneath a gilded mirror. A kilim under an antique desk, the city dissolving into the distance beyond. ✨

Via .aesthete Designing this home on the 72nd floor in Mumbai was all about balance—mixing the warmth of old-world pieces with a clean, modern feel, and that incredible 270° view gave us the perfect starting point. We sourced antiques and handicrafts from across India—like a 16th-century door that now anchors the foyer and the colored glass chandelier that adorns the dining room. We leaned into a wabi-sabi approach: raw textures, natural finishes, and pieces that show their age with pride. Every corner tells a story, and that’s what I love most about this project. It’s personal, layered, and full of heart.

A garden once dreamt, now beautifully weathered into memory.✨

Where time-softened florals drift like echoes of paradise, and each nuanced shade of natural wool carries the quiet poetry of a thousand springs lived and loved.

The Carpet Cellar was conceived not as a business, but as a lifelong pursuit, the quiet, unwavering passion of Mr. Sheel Chandra.

After studying thousands of carpets, rare textiles, heirloom shawls and works of art, his eye evolved into something instinctive: an ability to recognise lineage, to trace a weave back to its origin, to distinguish the extraordinary from the merely decorative. Where others saw ornament, he saw history. Where others saw pattern, he saw provenance.

That discernment became our foundation. An uncompromising devotion to quality. A refusal to settle for anything less than masterful craftsmanship. Every piece is chosen not only for its beauty, but for its integrity: of wool, of dye, of hand, of heritage.

It is this journey through time that defines us. A reverence for the past that allows us to present masterpieces, not simply to be displayed, but to be lived with, inherited, and cherished for generations.

What does the back of your carpet say? Flip over the side, and uncover the truth.

Centuries ago, a master weaver chose to narrate the poetry of the hunt—an equestrian figure in motion, spear poised, surrounded by lions, deer, and birds—an entire living tableau rendered in wool.
Unfolded this morning at Sunder Nursery, this antique shikar carpet is among the rarest we curate. Not for its scale or age, but for what it truly is—a work of art, meant to be lived with.

Some things are too beautiful to keep indoors.

The art of disappearing into a room. 🌞
Some of our favourite spaces are born from conversations, between a carpet and a chair, between craft and architecture, between the muted and the magnificent.

This one speaks in the quiet language of Bombay’s grandeur. And the carpet, listens, and completes. ✨

Medieval England. Delhi, 2025. Some things travel well.

Silk and satin. Gold chain-stitch. This is what a 15th-century English court looked like, when someone cared enough to sew it by hand. It’s not art on a wall. It’s a story on a thread.

Tudor England had tapestries on every wall. Not for beauty. For warmth. For power. For legacy. Today, the same instinct lives in how we dress our homes.

The Paradox of antique textile: the older it is, the more contemporary it feels. Because it was never following a trend. It was setting one.
