An open living room that still feels cosy.

In this Jalukbari apartment:
🔸 Living and dining in one open space
🔸 Walnut screen and glass doors that divide without blocking light
🔸 A long TV console with hidden storage
🔸 Earthy tones: rust, sage, stone, and jute

Modern, but warm. Made for everyday life.

A chair from 1928 that still feels modern.

The LC4 Chaise Longue was designed by Charlotte Perriand with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Le Corbusier called it a "machine for relaxing."

What makes it work:
🔸 The steel frame sits loose on its base and slides to any angle
🔸 No lever, no lock. Friction holds the position
🔸 The curve follows the body's natural resting line

It's a good reminder for anyone building a home: the pieces that last are the ones designed around how people actually use them.

Which iconic piece should we cover next?

When this apartment in Jalukbari first came to us, it was a 1BHK with a layout that simply didn't work. Space was wasted in corridors and corners, and the rooms never felt as big as the square footage said they should.

So we started with the plan, not the furniture. The home has been re-planned into a 2BHK of 1,200 sq ft, and the living room shows what that effort buys you.

The living and dining areas now share one continuous space, from the TV wall all the way to the dining table. A tall walnut and fluted-glass screen gently marks where one ends and the other begins, while still letting daylight through. Storage is built right into the wall, finished in walnut with steel-framed glass doors, so nothing crowds the floor. And the TV wall is kept deliberately simple: one long console, one screen, nothing else.

For colour, we chose rust, sage and stone, earthy tones that sit comfortably against white walls and marble floors. The result is a room that feels calm the moment you walk in.

This project is currently in progress, and the images are design renders. We'll be sharing more of it over the coming weeks, including the bedrooms and a rooftop garden.

Living with a layout that doesn't work for you? Good planning can change more than you'd think.

Calm is a design decision.

Jalukbari, Guwahati. This apartment started as a badly planned 1BHK. We re-planned it into a 1,200 sq ft 2BHK, and the living room is where that reworking is easiest to feel.

Living runs straight into dining with no wall in between. Where the two need separating, a walnut screen with fluted glass does it without blocking the light from the window. Storage is built into the wall, behind steel-framed glass doors, so the room stays open. The TV wall carries one long walnut console and nothing else.

The palette is rust, sage and stone, set against warm white and marble. Nothing loud. The room is meant for slow evenings, not for show.

Some furniture is nearly a hundred years old and still makes more sense than most of what's sold today.

In 1926, Josef Albers, a painter who studied and later taught at the Bauhaus, designed a set of four nesting tables. Oak frames, lacquered glass tops in green, yellow, orange and blue, each table slipping neatly under the one above it.

The idea is simple, and that's the point. On an ordinary day you have one side table. When family arrives for Bihu or friends come over for dinner, you have four. Then they disappear back into one again.

It's a lesson we come back to in our own work, especially in compact apartments here in Guwahati: every piece should earn the space it occupies. The best designs solve more than one problem at once, and they look good doing it.

Thinking about how to make a smaller space work harder? We're always happy to talk it through.

Why has the Egg Chair stayed iconic for almost 70 years?

Danish architect Arne Jacobsen designed it in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, a project where he designed everything from the building to the door handles. The hotel lobby was busy, and he wanted guests to have a quiet, private place to sit within it.

A few things make the design work:

The tall, curved shell creates a sense of privacy without any walls
The enclosed shape softens surrounding noise and movement
The swivel base lets you turn toward conversation or away from it
It used moulded shell and foam technology that was new at the time

A piece of furniture lasts when it's designed around how people actually live, not around a trend. We apply the same thinking to every home we design.

How much can a 140 sq ft bedroom hold?

In this Jalukbari apartment, the answer is a bed, a three-door wardrobe, a dresser with a full-length mirror, and clear space to move. It fits because the layout was planned first and the finishes came after.

Here's what makes it work:

Each piece of furniture has its own zone, so nothing blocks the walking path
Cane panels on the wardrobe and headboard keep large pieces from feeling heavy
Vertical timber slats draw the eye upward, so the room feels taller
An asymmetric layout (off-centre art, drawers on one side) keeps a small room from feeling boxed in
Light linen and natural materials let daylight do most of the work

This is the same flat we re-planned from a 1BHK into a 2BHK. The rooftop pergola garden is up next.
