WHEN 3D VISUALISATION CHANGED THE WAY WE DESIGNED

A few years ago, we used to do everything in 2D first and move to 3D only when it was time to visualise the design. Then we started working directly in 3D software.
And we realised something quite interesting:
Unknowingly we had been visualising in 2D too.

3D visualization allowed us to enter our spaces while designing them, see them at eye level and test our ideas about form, proportion and experience much earlier.

It also made it easier for our clients to understand the design and helped our team think about how things would actually be manufactured and put together.

For us, 3D became more than a presentation tool. It became a way of thinking.

BRINGING NATURE INTO THE WORKPLACE

Every project gives us an opportunity to understand people a little better. For this office designed for a young event-management team, we were particularly interested in their quality of life.
Event management is exciting, but it can also be a high-stress profession with unpredictable hours and little separation between work and personal time. We asked ourselves how could the workplace make things a little easier for them?
We felt that staying connected to the outside world was important.
The changing weather, natural light, sound of birds, rustling leaves and even the occasional raindrops can have a powerful effect on how we feel.
This led us to exploring biophilic design. But we didn't want to simply add plants to an office. We started with natural light and ventilation and then integrated living greens into the planning itself—around workstations and windows, making them an essential part of the space.

The result was a workplace that was bright, green and connected to nature—with windows that could actually be opened to let the outside in. A workplace designed for the people who make it happen!

EVERY LINE HAS A MEANING
The more we explore experiential and haptic design, the more we realise that every line on a drawing has the power to change an experience.
A curve feels different from a straight line.
An arch feels different from a rectangular opening.
A narrow entrance can make us bow our heads.
Heritage architecture is full of such deliberate moments.
Perhaps some small entrances were created to remind us of our own scale before nature, the universe or something greater than ourselves.
Architecture can do more than shelter us.
It can make us pause, humble us, excite us, connect us or make us feel small.
And that is why, at Stonehenge, we believe every line we draw needs a reason to exist.
Because form is never just form. It creates experience.

FROM SPACES TO LIVING SYSTEMS | PART 4

Experience Before Aesthetics

What happens when we design a space not just for how it looks, but for how it feels and functions?

In Part 4, we share how experiential design has become an increasingly important part of our design philosophy.

DO OUR MEMORIES SHAPE THE SPACES WE CREATE?

I often share childhood stories with my daughter. She loves listening to them repeatedly, and somehow, the stories never seem to get old.

But I have realised something while telling them.

I don't just remember what happened.
I remember the spaces where it happened.

The warm patch of winter sunlight beside the jamun tree where I would lie bundled in a quilt.

The little space under the terrace staircase where I studied during exams—connected to the life happening downstairs, yet somehow completely my own.

The Mall Road in Jalandhar, outside our Army accommodation, covered in yellow amaltas flowers.

These places are still alive in my memory because they were more than physical spaces. They were experiences. Feelings. Sensations.

Perhaps this is why, when we design our homes today, we unconsciously recreate fragments of places that have meant something to us.

A particular kind of light.
A material.
A quiet corner.
A connection to the outdoors.

Peter Zumthor speaks beautifully about architecture as an encounter with the physical world—an experience that engages all our senses.

At Stonehenge, we try to bring these deeply embedded memories into our clients' present-day spaces—sometimes directly, sometimes in ways that are almost imperceptible.

Because sometimes the best compliment a space can receive is not “It looks beautiful.”

It is:

“This feels strangely familiar.”

A well-designed office is more than desks and meeting rooms - it shapes how people move, pause, interact, and feel throughout the day.

In this project, we looked at the workplace through behavior mapping, using liminal spaces, circulation cues, breakout edges, and green gathering points to create a more intuitive and human-centered office.

The spaces between functions often matter the most:

Where someone pauses with a laptop
Where colleagues stop for a quick exchange
Where greenery creates a natural point of connection
Where movement feels clear and effortless
That is where office design begins to influence culture, comfort, and daily experience.

THE COMPROMISE IN DESIGN

We are currently designing a gourmet grocery store around four brand values: purity, integrity, seasonality and vitality.

We wanted these values to be felt—not just seen.

So we explored natural materials, Non-VOC finishes, locally sourced materials and carefully focused lighting.

Why We Buy also became an interesting guide in understanding how customers actually observe and navigate retail spaces.

But then came the reality of design:

maintenance + durability + budget.

Real wood is beautiful, but is it practical in a busy retail environment? Natural stone has a wonderful character, but is it always viable within the budget?

And so we compromise.

Laminates that look and feel like wood.
Tiles that closely resemble natural stone.

Which brings us to a question we often struggle with as designers:

Where do you compromise without compromising the experience?

Perhaps memorable design isn't about having everything we imagined.

Perhaps it is about knowing what matters enough not to compromise.

Would love to know how other designers approach this dilemma.

DESIGNING FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Our design process changed when we stopped beginning with plans and elevations—and started with people.

For homes, we looked at routines, personalities, memories and aspirations.

For workplaces, we observed how people actually moved, worked, collaborated, found privacy and took breaks.

We listened. We observed. We looked for patterns.

Design decisions were no longer based on trends or assumptions, but on observation, empathy and research.

Every line on the drawing board needed a reason to exist.

Because good design begins with understanding the people who will inhabit the space......read teh full article in linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/series-from-spaces-living-systems-vimi-rath-bgrdc/

Can the spaces around us help us feel better?
We believe they can.

At Stonehenge, one of the things we keep coming back to in our design is our relationship with nature.

A patient recovering in a room filled with daylight and views of greenery experiences a very different environment from someone recovering in a dark, enclosed space.

A child learning beside a garden, feeling the breeze, watching a tree change through the seasons, has a very different sensory experience as compared to a child spending the entire day inside a sealed classroom.

And an employee who can see the sky, feel fresh air and take a moment to look at greenery during a long working day has an opportunity to pause and reset.

This is what biophilia means to us.

It isn't about putting a few plants into an interior and calling it a biophilic space.

It is about creating a deeper connection between people and the natural world.

Greenery
Natural light
Fresh air
Natural materials
Sounds of nature
Changing light and weather
A connection between indoors and outdoors

Whether we are designing for a child, a teenager, an elderly person, a patient or someone spending eight hours at work, the environment around them matters, when we can bring the outdoors in naturally, we should.

And when we can't, we can still create sensory reminders of nature through materials, textures, light, sound, air and space.

Because good design should do more than just look beautiful.
It should make us feel better, too.

What makes a house truly feel like home?
In our experience, it isn't the furniture, finishes, or colours alone.
It's the memories that the space gently brings back.

The fragrance of a favorite flower, the sound of the distant temple bells, familiar textures, family traditions, and little rituals that have quietly shaped us since childhood. These are the things that make us feel rooted and at peace.

When we designed this home for a lawyer couple from North and South India, our greatest source of inspiration wasn't a design trend—it was their stories. By understanding their memories, lifestyles, and cultural influences, we were able to create a home that reflected both identities in a natural and harmonious way.

This project reaffirmed something we deeply believe: the most meaningful design begins with listening.

Every home has a story. Our role is to help that story find its place.
