Because the rug can be the initial focal point for the whole room.

The colors can be used to help determine the palette.
It can have an effect on the furniture and fabrics created.
It can dictate the seating arrangement, depending on its dimensions.
Its texture can lend the warmth and character that makes all the pieces come together.

If you select the rug as the final step, you may have to try and find the rug that fits with your current decor.

If you select it early in the design process, you can plan the space around it.

When the rug is custom made, this is particularly crucial as the dimensions, hues, pattern and material can be determined from the start as part of a room.

Sometimes, it makes more sense to start with the rug.
