'Vincent Van Gogh'
Vincent Van Gogh is widely regarded as the most admired painter in the world. Unlike Impressionist painting, which is characterized by short, thin brushstrokes, regular colors, and the depiction of light’s changing effects, Van Gogh's Post-Impressionist technique is instantly recognizable for its vibrant use of color and bold, thick brushstrokes. Rejected during his lifetime, Van Gogh was celebrated only after his death. The Dutch painter is now considered one of the greatest artists in history. Despite his immense talent, only one of his paintings, "The Red Vineyard," was sold during his lifetime.
Living in poverty, Van Gogh often struggled to afford basic materials like canvas and ink for his deeply expressive works. Yet, paradoxically, his paintings are now among the most valuable in the world, with an average price of $70 million or 600 crore rupees.
Remarkably, Van Gogh created the majority of his works in the last decade of his life, producing approximately 2,100 artworks, including 860 oil paintings. While most of these masterpieces are housed in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, others are held in various private collections around the world.
In 1887, Van Gogh experienced severe mental health challenges, famously gifting his own ear to a lover. He was later admitted to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for treatment. During his stay, he painted "The Starry Night" in 1889, a masterpiece that depicts the view from his bedroom window just before sunrise. The village scene, however, was a product of his imagination. The painting's swirling blues, moonlit night, and Van Gogh's masterful composition have made it one of the greatest artistic achievements of all time.
Van Gogh's work began to receive critical acclaim shortly before his death in 1890, at the age of 37, from a gunshot wound, which some speculate may have been a mysterious murder rather than a su***de. Despite his tragic end, Van Gogh has become the most celebrated artist posthumously, his life and work symbolizing the misunderstood genius.
Iconic pieces like "The Starry Night,"The Sunflower", "The Sunflowers Series," "Wheatfield with Crows," "Self-Portrait," "Irises," "The Bedroom in Arles," and "The Potato Eaters" continue to captivate audiences around the world.
