The House of Frames. Frames - whether in the form of doors, corridors, windows, or decorative elements—play a crucial role in Indian houses, seamlessly blending architectural function with cultural symbolism. Traditionally, Indian homes are designed with a deep awareness of thresholds and transitions, where frames act as both structural necessities and symbolic markers of protection, aesthetics, and spirituality.

From intricately carved wooden door frames in Rajasthan’s havelis to ornate stone thresholds in South Indian temples, frames have always been more than just structural elements. They define spatial boundaries while facilitating airflow and light—crucial in India’s diverse climatic conditions. Vastu Shastra, the ancient Indian architectural science, underscores the significance of well-placed openings, door and window frames in ensuring the smooth flow of positive energy.

At The ABODE, we integrate Indian philosophies with modern-day aesthetics to design contemporary Indian homes. While designing fashion designers Ajay and Lavanya’s home, we emphasized framing the transitions to enhance spatial definition, creating a harmonious interplay between aesthetics, spirituality, and practicality.
