For this Kolkata office, we wanted the reception and work areas to feel connected, clean, warm and practical without making the space feel too corporate.

• The reception has a soft, curved form that makes the entrance feel more welcoming. The neutral palette, marble flooring and warm lighting keep it understated but still give it a strong first impression.

• The lift lobby was kept quiet and elegant, with marble running across the walls and floor and the bronze toned lift doors adding just enough warmth. A small seating corner and some greenery make it feel less like a passage and more like a considered part of the office.

• The small meeting room is enclosed in glass, keeping it private when needed while still staying visually connected to the rest of the office.

• The workstations are simple and functional, with warm toned partitions, clean desks and enough breathing space to keep the area comfortable through the day.

Simple spaces, but each one designed to do its job well.

For this Kolkata based project, we wanted the MD’s chamber and conference room to feel clean, spacious and comfortable, while keeping the overall look minimal.

• The conference room follows the same palette, with a large, curved edge table, comfortable seating and a well lit ceiling. The idea was to keep it simple and functional, with the city view becoming a part of the space.

• The MD’s chamber has a soft neutral palette, with rounded furniture, subtle detailing and a warm finish. The large windows bring in plenty of natural light, while the seating corner makes the space feel a little more relaxed.

A look at two spaces designed to keep things understated yet practical.

For the community spaces at Merlin Elements in Kolkata, we wanted the design to feel polished but still warm and welcoming, spaces that work for everyday use without feeling like typical common areas.

• The community hall has a calm, neutral base with marble flooring, warm wood details and artwork adding character to the space. The large sculptural light becomes the main feature, while the full-height windows bring in plenty of natural light and keep the space feeling open.

• The gym was designed to feel bright and energetic without going overboard. The large windows bring in plenty of daylight and views of the greenery outside, while the illustrated fitness panels add a playful touch to the clean, minimal setting. The open layout also keeps the space comfortable when it’s being used by multiple people.

Two spaces, two different moods, both designed to be used and enjoyed every day.

Which one would you spend the most time in?

For this kids’ play area for Merlin Group in Kolkata, we wanted the space to feel playful without making it look too loud or theme-based. The idea was to keep it bright, open and easy for children to actually use.

• We used the floor itself to bring in colour and movement. The curved orange and blue lines create little zones within the larger space, while keeping everything connected and open.

• The play structures were kept simple and mostly in wood, with pops of colour that work with the rest of the room. Nothing too fixed or complicated, so the space can adapt as children use it in different ways.

• One of our favourite elements is the custom shelving. The mix of open niches, curved edges and colourful hexagonal units gives the children plenty to explore, while also doubling up as storage and display.

• We kept the walls fairly neutral and let the artwork, furniture and play elements bring in the fun. The large windows and high ceiling also help the space feel much more open and airy.

A space designed to let kids just play, move around and be kids.

For the master bedroom of this model flat, we wanted to keep things warm, comfortable and easy on the eye, while still giving the room a little character.

• The bed wall is the main focus of the room, with the large-scale mural adding softness and depth without making the space feel too busy. We kept the bed and bedside units fairly simple so the wall could do the talking.

• We used a muted green through the bedding and wardrobe details to bring some colour into the otherwise neutral palette. It keeps the room feeling fresh without being too loud.

• The dark wardrobe and TV unit add a little contrast and also help break up all the lighter tones in the room. The fabric panels on the wardrobe bring in some warmth and make the storage feel less like a heavy block.

• We kept the furniture fairly clean lined, with a few softer details through the bed, rug, curtains and lighting. The idea was to make the room feel put together but still like a space you could actually live in.

For a model flat, we wanted this bedroom to feel aspirational but not overdone, something that looks finished, yet still feels comfortable and familiar. Would you see yourself living in a room like this?

For this 12,450 sq ft Café GP in Kolkata, we wanted the space to feel like it belonged to the world of racing, but still work as a café where people could actually sit, eat and spend time. Since the concept was around MotoGP, we let that idea guide most of the design without making it feel too literal.

• We kept the ceiling exposed, with the services and red pipes becoming part of the look. The neon signs, racing graphics and track markings add to the overall energy of the space.

• The motorcycles are a big part of the café and were treated almost like part of the interiors rather than just displays. They naturally become a focal point wherever you see them.

• We used red, green, black and white across the two floors to keep the racing connection consistent, while warm wood and softer seating helped balance it out.

• There are different kinds of seating and recreation areas, including the pool table, so the space doesn’t feel like it is only about the theme. It is still meant to be a place to hang out.

What do you think, does it feel like a café or a racing garage to you?

For this son’s room in a 5,000 sqft home in Kolkata, we wanted to keep things comfortable and easy, while still giving the room its own personality. Since the space had to work as a bedroom, study and a place to relax, we tried to bring everything together without making it feel too busy. Here’s what we did:

• We used warm wood tones across the room to keep it cosy, while the vertical detailing behind the bed adds texture and gives the room a stronger backdrop.

• The colours are mostly warm and muted, with olive green and brown adding a little contrast. We kept the styling simple so the materials and artwork could stand out.

• The study and TV unit have a subtle metallic finish, which adds a more contemporary touch to the otherwise warm and earthy palette. The open shelves also give space for books and personal things.

• By the window, we added a comfortable lounge corner that gives him a separate spot to sit, watch something or just relax.

We really enjoyed putting this room together because it feels comfortable without being too styled. Which part would you pick for your own room? Let us know in the comments!

We’ve been designing this den room for a 5,000 sqft home in Kolkata, and the main idea was to create a space that feels comfortable enough for everyday use, but still has a sense of character. Here’s what we focused on:

• We kept the overall palette warm and earthy, with muted greens, soft browns and natural wood tones. It makes the room feel cosy without making it feel heavy.

• The wall panelling runs throughout the room to give the space a more finished, layered look, while the curved furniture and rounded coffee table soften all the straight lines.

• The ceiling became one of the key details of the room. The circular inset with a patterned finish and chandelier adds a slightly classic touch, while the rest of the design stays contemporary.

• We also wanted the den to work for more than just lounging, so the compact study nook sits naturally within the room without making it feel like a separate workspace.

We really liked how this space came together, warm, relaxed and still thoughtfully detailed. Which detail would you pick for your own den?
