Kamal Kadai, which means 'Lotus Embroidery' is a form of Indian Embroidery stitch. The Kamal Kadai is done on floral patterns. The petals are longest in the middle with a step-like descending formation on either side. It is often stitched with artificial silk threads called Kankri thread/Cone thread, which is soft, lustrous & Easy on Fingers. Here, the embroidery was done by my mother on Arepattu Saree using the yellow and white double-shaded Kankri thread.

Kasuti (Kannada: ಕಸೂತಿ) is a traditional embroidery practised in the regions of Dharwad, Belgaum, Hubballi and Bijapur districts of Karnataka, India. Traditionally Ilakkal saree was the preferred choice for this embroidery.
The Kasuti embroidery is influenced by the Rangoli patterns of Karnataka. One can find patterns like gopura, chariot, palanquin, lamps and conch shells.

Amma has used her Black cotton saree to make this Kasuti work. Red, Green and Yellow coloured Anchor threads where used. This is one of my mother’s favourite stitches. The stitch is beginner friendly- easy on hands and pleasant to the eyes !
