A sense of place begins with what already exists, the culture, craft, form and material memory of a region. The question is how to reinterpret it without turning it into a pastiche.

In these villas in Goa, this reimagining of memory has translated into high ceilings and deep-set arched openings drawn from Indo-Portuguese homes, paired with a palette rooted in the region. Laterite stone walls, lime-plastered surfaces, carved wood joinery, and cane panels bring in a tactile familiarity.

The flooring and surfaces draw from traditional Goan tile vocabulary, patterned tiles, and inlaid borders that define thresholds and edges, much like in older homes, while stone bands and skirting ground the spaces.

It’s through these details that the space begins to feel anchored—quietly rooted in where it stands.

Putting in the groundwork to bring another to life!

This time in Mumbai, we’re shaping a retail environment where light doesn’t just illuminate, but begins to define how you move, see, and experience form.

Still taking form, but its language is starting to emerge. Stay Tuned!

When travelling today, people aren’t simply looking to move through curated itineraries. What they seek is a way to experience a place more intimately, to engage with its culture within the very space they inhabit.

This shift towards slower, more immersive travel feels inevitable in a world that is otherwise fast, repetitive, and increasingly detached from context. There is a growing pull towards spaces that are rooted—spaces that don’t just accommodate, but restore a sense of connection.

This is the experiential direction we’re exploring through the design of a series of villas in Goa.

Our approach begins with immersing ourselves in the memory of Goa embedded in its built fabric and reinterpreting it. The design language draws from its Indo-Portuguese lineage, wherein, elements are reworked through the lens of how the users live today, allowing tradition to adapt.

Each space is imagined as a pause because what people are really seeking today isn’t just hospitality, it’s a sense of being held by a place. A familiarity that doesn’t rely on repetition, but on resonance.

At Kalpataru One, while other spaces draw on a more refined Art Deco sensibility, the family room subtly steps away towards a lighter, more open interior expression. A space that allows for both pause and activity, it is designed to be still, yet accommodating of change.

While the interior elements, from material choices to textures and upholstery, remain composed, the artwork shifts that balance, becoming the element that heightens the room’s presence.

The work by Ravi Mandlik holds the eye, introducing variation without disrupting the continuity of the space. It does not act as a focal point in the conventional sense, but as a layer that changes how the room is experienced.

In a space used in many ways, conversation, pause, passing through, this becomes important. The room does not rely on objects to create energy; it holds it more subtly.

Here, the artwork allows that shift to happen, quietly, but consistently.

For the primary bedroom at Kalpataru One, the experience was imagined as inward: less about visual noise, more about layering.

The artworks follow this continuity. This work by Jyoti Shetty, in mixed media, is built through layers of colour and form, soft washes, and overlapping shapes, each gently blurring into one another. There is a suggestion of a figure, but it is not fully defined. It shifts depending on how you engage with it.

Within the bedroom, this piece became an important focal point, because the space is not designed for statement—it is designed for rest. For slowing down. For a visual ease that doesn’t demand attention.

And the artwork holds a similar quality. It allows for a pause.
Placed against a muted backdrop, the works’ colours, from the blue to the ochre, and the softened greys introduce just enough variation in tone and depth without creating distraction.

At Kalpataru One, Worli, while the living and dining areas sit side by side, the experience we envisioned for each was distinct. The dining space carries a certain density, so the living room was shaped as a counterpoint, shifting from intricacy to introspection.

Beyond materiality and detailing, the artwork plays an important role in this transition.

The Backwards Series by Natasha Preenja is placed to hold that pause. What appears as a graphic composition from a distance begins to dissolve up close, its layered mark-making revealing a quieter, more internal rhythm. In a room defined by minimalism, symmetry, and structure, the decision wasn’t to add another focal point, but to introduce a counterpoint, something that slows the eye down.

Here, the artwork becomes a way to temper the space, soften its precision, and allow for a more personal reading of the room.

Banquets are a living canvas, a space where stories gather, and footsteps echo constantly.

The challenge here is to reimagine what lasting really means, to make every encounter one of quiet endurance.

In our upcoming designs, whether through an interplay of marble and metal inlays or acoustic panels detailed with veneer, each material is chosen to form a deliberate language—one that holds its ground against time, yet welcomes each guest anew.

Trace the textures that shape the experience, as we craft spaces not just for today’s gatherings, but for how they will be used, worn, and seen over time.

Each detail is rooted in substance, every edge a testament to thoughtful choice. These are banquets imagined for a lifetime of footprints, where materials don’t merely last, but continue to hold.

What does it mean to design a showflat today?

Is it still about presentation, or about creating spaces that reflect how they will be lived in?

This month’s OpenTales explores the shift. Read more in the link in our bio!

Banquet spaces are often approached as singular, large volumes.

But in use, they’re anything but.
They’re made up of moments—large and intimate, gatherings loud and quiet.

So how does design allow these to coexist, without moving away from the grandeur?
By structuring how the space is read and occupied—through zoning that isn’t imposed, but felt, through elements that organise gatherings without enclosing them, and through a layout that allows multiple moments to unfold at once, without competing with the scale.

This is where banquet design begins to shift—from creating a space that impresses, to one that is experienced.

Kitchens are no longer spaces that simply function for cooking. They are where routines begin, conversations continue, aromas linger, and meals are shared.

When one space holds so many moments of daily life, the design has to respond with equal care. At Kalpataru One, each decision is made to support this.

Marble surfaces wrap the counter and island, establishing a continuous base. Against this, the cabinetry sits almost flush, its finish almost creating a reflective quality to keep the space composed rather than overtly defined.

Details remain subdued—handles recessed, edges softened, storage concealed—allowing the experience to feel uninterrupted.

A kitchen space designed for effortless use.

When designing a showflat today, especially in cities like Mumbai, everything about the space is understood in moments.

Art, then, cannot remain a backdrop—it becomes a catalyst in shaping an experience.

At Kalpataru One, Worli, curating each piece became integral to the design process—considered alongside material, layout, and finish to build a unified immersiveness.

In the dining area, Asvattha by Varsha Patra introduces that shift through intricacy—its Aari hand-embroidery bringing a finer, more tactile layer within the larger composition.
The work grounds the space in Indian craftsmanship as a distinct expression of luxury.

How do you see art shaping the experience of a home?

For us at Open Atelier Mumbai, luxury—especially in bathrooms—has never been about how opulent a space appears, or how ornate its elements are.

It begins with how the space is experienced.

In a showflat, this understanding becomes even more profound. The bathroom can’t be seen as merely functional; the objective should be to create a sense of comfort and calm, a retreat within a retreat.

And at Kalpataru One, this takes shape through continuity—
A combination of ribbed and polished marble flows seamlessly across walls, floors, and ledges, allowing the space to read as one.
Subtle shifts in texture and tone introduce depth, without breaking that continuity. Metal is used with restraint to define transitions rather than decorate them.

This is where design and functionality meet emotion, and for us, that is what defines luxury within a showflat, even in its most private spaces.
