THE DESIGNER’S PERSPECTIVE #01
Why context matters.
I don’t believe there is a formula for designing a home.
The starting point, for me, is always understanding who is going to live there, their age, lifestyle, routines, interests, how they spend their time and, most importantly, what makes their way of living different from anyone else’s.
House of Dudes was designed for two young bachelors, and that context became an important part of the design process.
Instead of approaching it as a conventional home and then adapting it to its users, we started with the users themselves. How they entertain, how they unwind, how they use the different spaces and what they needed their home to feel like.
That understanding influenced everything from the planning and furniture to the materials, colours and smaller details that give the home its character.
Because when we design without context, we risk creating beautiful spaces that could belong to anyone.
But when we understand the person, the lifestyle and the context, the design becomes specific.
And that’s when a house starts to feel truly yours.
