The subject matter of Indian sculpture was almost invariably abstracted human forms that were used to instruct people in the truths of the Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain religions.
The earliest known works of sculpture date from around 32,000 B.C. Early man created utilitarian objects that were decorated with sculptural forms. Ancient peoples also created small animal and human figures carved in bone, ivory, or stone for possible spiritual or religious purposes.
Indian sculptures are made of Dusty plains, waxy mud, wind-scoured granite outcroppings, massive fields of chlorite, lava-stone and sandstone, the great rocky, god-inhabited Himalayas, all combine to create a physical environment indicating sculpture as the natural form of expression, with clay, stone and aggregates (stucco) as the basic materials.

The earliest known records of domesticated elephants, which belonged to the Asian elephant species (Elephas maximus), tell of tamed elephants being used as beasts of burden at least 4,000 years ago during the Indus Valley civilization.
For centuries, India has regarded the majestic royal beast, the elephant, as its cultural symbol. The highly revered Hindu God, Lord Ganesha, is said to be a remover of obstacles and a provider of fortune and good luck. Considering this beloved God has been envisioned with an elephant head and a human body, elephants are believed to be an incarnation or representation of Ganesha. These mythological and cultural Hindu beliefs have established elephants as sacred symbols of peace, mental strength, and power. In line with these views, over the years, people have worshipped and used elephants in several ways. For example, royalty has employed war elephants to strengthen their armies, flaunt the kingdom's bravery and bring prestige and stature to their title. Elephants were also used in religious ceremonies and rituals in temples. Some elephants were even kept as pets and considered family members in ancient times!
