It's somehow fitting that my pet name was Goobe, and that I once worked at Goobe's Bookstore. Maybe I was always meant to have a soft spot for owls.
I've been fascinated by them for as long as I can remember. That curiosity eventually led me to birdwatching, always with the hope of catching a glimpse of one of these quiet, elusive birds. Every sighting feels special, and every sketch is my way of holding onto that moment a little longer.
Over the years, I've also learned from people in different parts of India that owls are still killed because they're believed to bring bad luck. It's heartbreaking, especially when they're such important predators that help maintain the balance of ecosystems. But even beyond the role they play, every living creature deserves to exist, whether or not we see its value.
On International Owl Awareness Day, here's to appreciating these incredible birds for who they are, not for the myths that surround them.
Hoping to see and sketch many more Goobes. 🦉🤎
