Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design -Astino

I have known Simona Maschii since the time we were both working on our master thesis with Ezio Manzini. Although we rarely meet in person - she lives in Copenhagen most of the time - we have continued to follow each other’s work and paths over the years.

So I recently went to visit her in Astino: partly for friendship, but also out of curiosity, to experience this educational project in such a peculiar setting.

The Institute is located next to an 11th-century monastery, in a quiet, green valley just a few kilometres from Bergamo. To reach the school, you walk the last 300 metres through the landscape. And once there, the atmosphere is one of remarkable calm and focus.

What interest me most were the students’ projects and the questions they were addressing: social, cultural and ethical challenges ranging from improving interactions between immigrants and municipal employees, to supporting women during perimenopause; from protecting and promoting water resources, to developing solutions for dogs experiencing blindness.

Different issues, different perspectives, students from different parts of the world, all using design as a tool to investigate and respond to real-life challenges.

It made me think about the role of context in design education.

Could stepping away from the noise, speed and constant stimulation of the city actually help us think differently? Could a quieter environment create the conditions for deeper observation, concentration and more meaningful solutions?

In my own teaching experience, I increasingly feel that the ability to focus on a problem has become one of the most difficult skills to develop in a generation that is hyper-connected and constantly exposed to stimuli.

Creating spaces for concentration is itself becoming an important part of education — and, more broadly, of design.

A very interesting experiment, both for what happens inside the school and for the place that surrounds it.

Al Muse ho scoperto che noi e le viti (ovvero la pianta dell’uva) abbiamo in comune il 26% di patrimonio genetico… non siamo solo “figli degli scimpanzè” - questo lo sappiamo tutti - ma di un’evoluzione che attraversa milioni di anni, di cui abbiamo traccia nei nostri geni.
Le vacanze nelle Dolomiti, l’esperienza di una fisicità naturale fatta di rocce, alberi, acqua fresca di montagna, profumi di cirmolo, mi lascia latente il pensiero se davvero la strada giusta per me è quella dell’AI, se mi voglio immergere in questo fiume così sorprendente nei risultati ma così lontano dal contatto con le nostre origini.
Dolomiti – e ancora un’estate di ricordi _ ci andavo da ragazza con la famiglia, ed era il tempo con papà, principe delle camminate “ardite” (ricordi di ferrate fatte con le liscissime Stan Smith!).
Un tempo per rigenerarsi, per accorgersi che la gamba non è allenata (e si mettono in pista come sempre i buoni propositi!) mentre mio figlio è ormai un capriolo che salta di roccia in roccia.

Cosa mi resta dei giorni a Cefalonia… un tempo come sospeso tra il mare purissimo, i pensieri che si svuotano della quotidianità “casa-lavoro” per lasciare spazio ai ricordi:
il compleanno di papà che non c’è più da 8 anni … ma anche Guccini che ci lascia lo stesso giorno, lui che mi aveva accompagnato con le sue poesie nell’adolescenza difficile dopo la morte di mia mamma.
Mare, sole, ma anche lo spazio per “nuovi incontri” inaspettati … un libro ”White Holes” di Carlo Rovelli, trovato in camera insieme ad altri lasciati da ospiti precedenti – un libro letto un pomeriggio riflettendo sul ritmo e respiro dell’universo mentre intorno le cicale frinivano in maniera quasi assordante.
Da quanto non leggevo un libro di scienza? Quante riflessioni mi ha fatto fare in quei giorni in maniera così inaspettata. (un algoritmo no me l’avrebbe mai proposto…)

Progettare uno SPAZIO RETAIL nel mondo della moda significa guidare il cliente attraverso un percorso di senso: oltre allo studio generale dello spazio, il progetto si articola sempre su tre punti focali:
_ La Vetrina | Il primo contatto dall'esterno
È il biglietto da visita dello store dove raccontare l'identità del brand
_ L'Esposizione e le Appenderie | Il contatto con il prodotto
Qui il design incontra la tattilità. Le strutture e l'illuminazione sono studiate per valorizzare la qualità dei tessuti, rendendo la scelta del capo un'esperienza piacevole.
_ La Cassa e l'Accoglienza | Il servizio su misura
Il momento conclusivo del viaggio. Uno spazio concepito a come un'area di relazione e cura del cliente, in stile hospitality.

Giornata di tesi in Interni al Politecnico di Milano - Facoltà del Design: un momento che ogni anno conferma quanto sia stimolante accompagnare gli studenti fino alla presentazione finale e vederli pronti a intraprendere il loro percorso professionale.

Le tesi hanno presentato i risultati del laboratorio di progettazione sviluppato insieme ai professori Giulia Gerosa, Massimo Reccanello e Barbara Del Curto, in collaborazione con Grandi Stazioni, sul tema del retail nella Stazione Centrale di Milano.

Tra gli aspetti che continuano a colpirmi c'è il valore del modello fisico e la centralità della material board nel progetto di interior design. Anche in un contesto in cui i progetti integrano soluzioni tecnologiche sempre più evolute e, talvolta, sorprendenti, la dimensione materica e tangibile del progetto rimane uno strumento fondamentale di ricerca, sperimentazione e comunicazione.

Another semester at NABA has come to an end, and students are now ready for new challanges in the working life (after holidays and final thesis)!
Our focus was on designing products and services for hybrid spaces that bring together work and hospitality: an increasingly relevant area where new behaviors, experiences, and business models intersect.
Teaching an international class is always a rewarding experience. The diversity of perspectives, cultures, and approaches consistently brings fresh ideas and meaningful discussions, making the learning process enriching for everyone, myself included.
A special thank you to Denise Nicolau and Matteo Tagliabue from Frog Design, Giuseppe Tortato, Paola Silva Coronel, Francesco Messorii, and Savina Radeva for joining the course as guest speakers and generously sharing their expertise and professional experiences with the students.
And, of course, my sincere thanks to Maira Chighine for her invaluable support in coordinating and organizing the course.
