OUR TOWN
The town is located about 15 kilometres south of Perugia, near Assisi, between Rome and Florence, on a hillock that overlooks the Tiber Valley. The old village is set against the historic fortifications and three gates in this traditional defence system lead into the old centre. The civic towers loom above the walls, together with the bell tower of the Gothic-style San Francesco church, consecrated in 1388. Production of ceramics in Deruta goes back centuries. There is documentation of this art form dated 12 August 1290 and states that there was "payment in kind" with "unam soumam vasorum". Deruta majolica achieved the apex of its magnificence in the centuries that followed and in the 1500s spread throughout major cities and not just in Italy. MARIO SAMBUCO
In the late 1950’s, Mario Sambuco, after acquiring extensive and thorough knowledge of Deruta’s ceramic-making traditions and techniques, founded the Sambuco company. His goal was to conserve and protect this tradition by producing pieces in a wide variety of shapes and decorations, inspired by models and designs from Deruta’s historic ceramic-making tradition. He also wanted his pieces to express a sense of modernity, to reflect contemporary tastes. Today, the company is qualified to offer the highest quality, “made in Deruta” pieces with distinctive, traditional Deruta painting styles such as Raphael-style designs, Floral Motifs, Calligraphy, Compendiario-style designs and, following the tradition of the twentieth-century master painters, faithful reproductions of the most precious majolica wares of the Renaissance period and majolica pieces inspired by paintings from the great master painters (Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio, Bruegel, Monet, Manet, Klimt, Kandinsky, Miró etc.). In addition to its “classic” pieces, Sambuco also makes ceramics featuring Art Nouveau and Art Déco styles and countless other precious crafts. The knowledge of craftmanship combined to precious raw materials and highly skilled artisans characterized the soul of “Sambuco Ceramiche” that is translated into pieces with a modern yet local “classic” look, which are traditionally renowned and rich with Medieval, Renaissance and twentieth-century styles, for which Deruta’s crafts are famous. This rational co-existence between the ancient and the modern is attested to by the countless lines that are produced and on display in the company’s Deruta showroom. Here, you can find furnishing and décor pieces, ceramics for everyday use, tableware, flooring, tables, lamps, liturgical furnishings and much more, all hand crafted in a vast range of shapes and decorations. These pieces can also be personalized or created from a client’s specifications
The company, which is qualified to export its goods throughout the world, works in accordance with UNI EN SO 9001-2008 Quality Standards, holds the GOST certification for the Russian Federation, and bears the CAT trademark (law no. 188 of 9 July 1990) and, since 2000, Sambuco has been developing a research and development project entitled “Stilnovo”. In collaboration with contemporary artists and designers, its goal is to create new forms and decorations, to experiment with new materials and create new furnishing solutions and applications. The company’s steadfast and serious commitment to craftsmanship, culture and ongoing research into quality and its modern entrepreneurial approach have been rewarded. Sambuco’s products not only enjoy positive reception from national and international markets, but have also earned recognition from the Regional Ceramics Museum of Deruta, which preserves a Sambuco piece awarded the top prize at the First Ceramic-Makers Competition (Deruta 1991) for the following reason: “Your work, in both shape and decoration, respects and reconfirms Deruta’s artistic tradition through an intelligent commitment to innovation”. THE ART OF CERAMIC
After drying of the model produced at room temperature (whether it has been etched or not), the object will then be placed in a chamber for its first firing at just under 1000°C. This will take just under a day, then the chamber can be opened to remove the fired piece, called "bisquit". Second firing is at about 920°/950° C and is needed to bond the decoration to the object. During this firing the previously applied crystalline glaze will melt and become transparent. After this phase the item will acquire brilliance, impermeability and the colours will change their initial appearance, with their real beauty coming to the surface. Third and last firing is only required for objects where gold and/or other precious materials have been applied. Sambuco is also dedicated to the study and use materials rarely found in wares from Deruta, including precious materials such as gold, platinum and copper. He then went on to specialize in the field of contemporary ceramics, and later produced an extensive line of religious items including chalices, patens, Communion pyx, etc.. The craftsmen of Sambuco, through continous research and the growing desire for innovation, always distinctive in our factory, used wisely mixes, glazes and colors, to create an innovative product, perfect to be used at home and in the kitchen: S-Clay. This new generation of majolica has a higher resistance to shock and it is microwave and dishwasher friendly. At the same time, S-Clay can be threated with colour as if it were artistic majolica thus enabling a wide colour range. Usually the paint is applied over the glaze since it is only performed by hand over the base colour (glaze) applied in the previous stage. The colours used for decorating are produced with ground minerals, which are then diluted with water and applied to the object by hand using various types of paint brush, depending on the type of painting or detail required on the surface. One of the problems encountered when painting pottery is that the colours used for the decoration will change hue after the second firing, so the artist will need to foresee the end effect of the applications. Sambuco dedicates a part of its production to accent furnishings, lamps, tables, benches, chandeliers, mirrors, floor and wall tiles, accessories for the bathroom and the kitchen, shelves, switch plates and much more. These pieces are carefully designed to bring together tradition, beauty, design and functionality. The home furnishings line also features a rich selection of tables, made with a single top or with multiple stones or tiles, for both indoor and outdoor use. Made to endure the effects of the weather, they are available in various sizes and shapes: round, square, rectangular, oval, elliptical and in modular versions. They can be mounted on solid iron bases made with traditional Umbrian craftsmanship techniques, or on bases made of wood, steel, or other durable material, depending on the client’s tastes and needs. Sambuco’s hand-crafted tables are perfect for any type of decor. They can be decorated with any type of design, from classic motifs inspired by Deruta’s ceramic-painting tradition (Raphael-style, floral designs, calligraphy, compendiario-style, with religious and allegorical images) or with more modern designs. Each piece is crafted by the skilled hands of the company’s expert potters. And thanks to their impressive skill, conscientiousness and talent, they can reproduce and satisfy virtually any special request, in accordance with current regulations regarding quality and traditional craftsmanship, using highly qualified tools and resources to design and produce the pieces.
