EN - Many of the houses we renovate were built without architects, yet with a very precise understanding of what was needed.

Even AI is beginning to become accustomed to limewashed thick walls, patterned cement tiles, vaulted ceilings — elements from the traditional building vocabulary of the territories we inhabit — and to remix them into predictable, vague proposals of pure aesthetic pleasure. After all, there isn’t much left to invent.

This farmhouse in the Valle della Cupa was once a wine-pressing room and dairy workshop on the ground floor, and a home upstairs, with modest signs of grace and social aspiration.

Our work is to give it new life and adapt it to that of its new inhabitants.

Other than that, we mostly try not to complicate what already works.

Time is our harshest judge. We often wonder how our projects age and how they are lived in. Have our design decisions proved as functional as we had hoped? To find out, we returned to visit Emanuele Gatto in his home and studio, Terra Arsa, which we completed in 2023.

We interviewed Emanuele Gatto to tell, in his own words, the story behind this house — from the first ideas shared with us, to his deepest desires, to the final result that now accompanies him every day, in both his work and his life.
A deep connection to the land and the Mediterranean countryside, to rediscover that sense of belonging to a familiar place. A home designed around him, for someone who lives through creativity and needs a space that can inspire, welcome, and transform alongside him.

INTERVISTA A EMANUELE GATTO. Ci chiediamo spesso come invecchiano i nostri progetti e come vengono abitati.

Built in 1820 by Francesco Maria Papaleo (1752-1828), of the Papaleo family of Bagnolo, as a country house, this building stands on the heights of Parco del Torcito, where the sea is visible even from the ground floor and the landscape is marked by "cuti" - limestone outcrops that have long shaped the character of the Salento countryside.

Elements such as the family crest carved above the portal, the oculi, and the building's deep connection to its setting still convey its original identity.

The interiors, heavily altered over time and stripped of much of their original fabric, called for a restrained and attentive approach.

EN - Southern Matter is a publication that explores architecture, places, and people through projects, weaving together conversations, research, and stories. More than a portfolio, it is a space for observation, a notebook on landscape and memory. Each issue begins with a project and unfolds through a conversation with the client, an exploration of the territory, and the documentation of a construction site in progress. What holds these threads together is the relationship between people, places, and memory: the substance of architecture itself.

Former to***co drying house in Alessano, Lecce ☀️
Rural architecture of the Salento countryside, once a quiet but essential part of a productive cycle that involved entire communities, from cultivation in the surrounding fields to drying, all the way to transport to the nearby factory. Form followed function, long before it became a manifesto.
