The road appears to be typical of an urban Greek stenopoi of which characterizes the entire historical center of Naples. As stenopos (cardinal Roman urbanism), the road served as a liaison between the two plateiai (decumani): the greater plateia (present via the courts) and lower (today Spaccanapoli). The two main streets of the then Neapolis, were therefore joint angles from thi
s road, at the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, where there stood the agora. Subsequently, the road was called plaetia nostriana as the fifteenth Bishop of Naples, San Nostriano, he built baths for the poor. [1]
About halfway, there is the historic church of San Gregorio Armeno founded around 930 on the foundations of the temple of Ceres. Only in 1205 the church was named after the saint of the same name. The art of crib [edit]
Some of the nativity characters along the way
The traditional nativity is St. Gregory Armenian has a remote source: on the street in classical times there was a temple dedicated to Ceres, to which the citizens as a votive offering of small terracotta figurines, manufactured in the shops nearby. [1] The birth of Neapolitan crib is of course much later, dating to the late eighteenth century. Today, via San Gregorio Armeno is known worldwide as the exhibition center of craft shops located here, which now produce all year figurines for nativity scenes, both canonical and original (usually every year the most eccentric craftsmen produce figurines with features of characters highly topical that might have distinguished themselves in a positive or negative during the year). The exhibitions begin in real time around the holiday season, usually from early November to January 6.
