Every Mile Matters: James Hadley-Piggin Runs for Acorn Enterprises

'Having completed my ‘seven marathons in seven days’ challenge last summer, I had gone into ‘running retirement’ and thought I had stopped running for good. However, whilst having a challenging experience at a summer camp in America, I found that running was one of the two things that got me through each day.

When one is facing adversity and tough times, it can feel like you don’t have a purpose so your motivation for achievement reaches an all time low. However, it is OK to break a stereotype and do something about it. This October, I am running the Jersey marathon with a twist. Embracing the concept of ‘living your best life’, after every mile, I will be showcasing a new dance move which will then build up to me performing a full dance routine after completing the marathon.

In doing so, I am raising money for Acorn Enterprises. Having recently become a Jersey Employment Trust (JET) Ambassador and gained a greater insight into the incredible work carried out by both the charity and their social enterprise, Acorn, I wanted to support them with all of the amazing work that they do all day, every day.

Every day of the year, Acorn provides much more than work and training opportunities. It provides purpose, confidence, independence and belonging to Islanders who may otherwise face barriers to employment. Through its supportive environment, individuals are given the chance to learn new skills, realise their potential and take meaningful steps towards employment and greater independence.

Yet there is still more work to do. With every pound raised, you will be helping Acorn continue its mission of creating opportunities for Islanders who have a disability or long-term health condition. Your support will help individuals build confidence, gain valuable skills, and work towards achieving their goals, opening doors that may otherwise have remained closed.

I look forward to entertaining you on Sunday 4th October!'

Leave a Legacy That Grows 🌱

A gift in your will can make a real difference to the lives of Islanders in Jersey for generations to come.

After providing for your loved ones, choosing to leave a gift to Acorn and Jersey Employment Trust helps us continue supporting Islanders who have a disability or long-term health condition into employment, training and independence.

Your old furniture and personal effects can do more than gather dust – they can change lives.

By leaving instructions to donate your belongings to Acorn, or leaving a gift in your will, you help support Islanders who have disabilities for years to come.

It's not just reuse. It's legacy.

Our executive officer, Penny Shurmer, will be standing down from her role in November to focus on her health and wellbeing.

During Penny’s tenure, JET has continued to grow its reach and impact while navigating a period of rising demand, increasing complexity and financial uncertainty. Under her leadership the organisation has helped hundreds of Islanders into work, expanded volunteering and employer partnerships, championed sustainability, and led initiatives that generated millions of pounds in social and economic value for the community.

Announcing her decision, Penny said: "It has been a privilege to lead JET and Acorn Enterprises and to work alongside such a dedicated team, our clients, our Ambassadors and our many partners across the Island. Together we have helped hundreds of Islanders secure and sustain meaningful employment, and we have shown the real difference that acceptance, adaptation and good leadership can make. I am grateful also for the public support for JET and Acorn."

Dan Perkins, Acting Chair of the Board of Trustees, said: "On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank Penny for her outstanding dedication and commitment to JET. She has led the organisation through a demanding period and has been a passionate advocate for Islanders who have a disability or long-term health condition. We wish her every success for the future."

The Board of Trustees will shortly begin the process of recruiting a new Executive Officer.

We feel sure you will join us in echoing Dan’s words.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to Acorn recently!

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and support of our community. Thanks to your kindness, we currently have a large volume of donations waiting to be processed and our team is working hard to get everything sorted and onto the shop floor.

As we begin making space for our autumn and winter collections, we're kindly asking supporters to pause clothing donations for the time being, particularly summer items.

Thank you again for thinking of us and for your continued support and patience.

💚 Your donations make a real difference.

Well, we never saw this coming... and we're really cut up about it.

After 20 years of loyal service, the Acorn Woodshack chainsaw has finally decided it's time to log off for good.

Unfortunately, without it, our winter plans could be cut short, and that's not something we'd like to branch into.

A replacement chainsaw will cost around £900, so we're reaching out to our community to see if anyone can help us get back on track. Every day, our Woodshack team works hard creating beautiful creations while also providing work and training opportunities for Islanders who have a disability or long-term health condition to develop skills, confidence and take steps towards employment. We'd hate to see them left stumped.

If you, your business, or someone you know could help towards the cost of a new chainsaw, we'd be absolutely chuffed to bits.

Please get in touch with [email protected] if you think you can help.

The Force was definitely with Val! 🚒🛰️

After completing her eighth skydive and second in support of Acorn, Val was welcomed safely back down to Earth by the amazing Stormtroopers Jersey team and our fantastic Fire Service, complete with a fire engine!

Fittingly, two of Val's favourite things in life (apart from Acorn, of course!) are Star Wars and fire engines, so you could say her landing was the welcome-home party of her dreams.

Val is one of Acorn's longest-serving employees of over 20 years, and currently works in our Plastic Recycling Workshop, cutting and preparing recycled plastic before it heads into the shredding machine. She dedicated this skydive "for the people" at Acorn, helping to raise funds for the workshop she is so passionate about.

There's still time to support Val's fundraising mission! Every donation will help us purchase more moulds, expand the workshop, and create even more training and employment opportunities for Islanders who have a disability and long-term health condition.

Donate using the link below, or if you're visiting one of our Acorn stores, look out for the collection buckets at the tills: https://tinyurl.com/ValSkydive

From a galaxy far, far away to a fire engine waiting on the ground, this was truly the perfect landing for our Skywalker, Val!

Shocking News...🚨

We'd like to say a huge thank you to the Integritas Charitable Trust for their recent donation towards a brand new SmartPAT Tester for Acorn's Electrical Department.

Every electrical item donated to Acorn is thoroughly PAT tested before it reaches the shop floor, helping us ensure quality, safety and peace of mind for our customers.

Thanks to this donation, our team can continue checking and preparing donated electrical items to the highest standards.

Pictured are Acorn Technical Team Leader Ian Florence and Acorn PAT Tester Chic McCabe with the new equipment.

Thank you, Integritas Charitable Trust, for helping us keep the power on behind the scenes.

We are delighted to be part of the Waitrose Community Matters scheme this year.
If you shop at Waitrose in Vallée des Vaux, please consider ‘voting’ for Acorn with your green tokens.

Funds raised will support our new plastics workshop, helping us purchase new moulds so we can create even more products from recycled plastic.

By supporting Acorn, you are helping provide employment, training and personal development opportunities for Islanders who have disabilities and long-term health conditions, while also supporting an innovative environmental project.

Thank you for your support and for helping us make a positive impact in our community
