Every successful urban masterplan begins with understanding the place.

Designed in 2008, the D.D.C. Project was developed through a comprehensive urban design process that began with an in-depth analysis of Djibouti’s context. We studied the city’s environmental conditions, coastline, topography, climate, existing urban fabric, mobility patterns, and future development potential to understand both the opportunities and the challenges of the site.

The design process started with simple conceptual sketches that explored the site’s potential and established the project’s overall vision. From there, functional requirements were translated into bubble diagrams, allowing us to define spatial relationships, land-use distribution, and development priorities. We then refined the urban structure, developed the circulation hierarchy, enhanced connectivity, strengthened the public realm, and created a coherent framework that responds to both the natural landscape and the city’s future needs.

Through an iterative urban design process, each stage informed the next, transforming early concepts into a comprehensive masterplan that balances functionality, sustainability, accessibility, and long-term urban growth.
