屋久島南部の山麓に計画された、手つかずの自然に身を委ねるための静かな滞在拠点です。
今回のプロジェクトは、もともと陶芸やキャンドルづくりなどの体験施設として使われていた場所を、自然に向き合うためのリトリートの場へと再編する、というものです。計画にあたっては、敷地内のさまざまな（屋久島らしい）表情をいかし、それに応じた〈場〉をつくっていくことを主題としました。エリアを大きく〈開放的で活力のある場〉と〈静寂で厳かな場〉とに分割しながら連関させ、決して屋久島の自然と対峙するのではなく、そのなかへ拓かれていくような空間を意識しています。
今回新たな設計とした母屋についても、屋久島の自然に同期するように存在することをめざしました。石貼りの壁は、山の中に昔からあった遺跡のような佇まいで、建築を風景の一部として静かに溶け込ませています。LDKは〈開放的で活力のある場〉に向けて大きく開き、一方で主寝室や浴室は、森や沢、落水の気配を間近に感じられる〈静寂で厳かな場〉に面して配置しました。
This quiet retreat, planned at the foothills of southern Yakushima, invites guests to immerse themselves in untouched nature.
This project involves transforming a site originally used for experiential activities like pottery and candle-making into a retreat for connecting with nature. The planning focused on utilizing the diverse (typically Yakushima) expressions found throughout the site to create corresponding spaces. We divided the area broadly into an “open, vibrant space” and a “quiet, solemn space,” connecting them while consciously creating spaces that open up into the nature of Yakushima rather than confronting it.
The newly designed main house also aims to exist in sync with Yakushima's nature. Stone-clad walls evoke the presence of ancient ruins nestled in the mountains, allowing the architecture to quietly blend into the landscape. The LDK opens expansively toward the open and vibrant space, while the master bedroom and bathroom face the quiet and solemn space, where the presence of the forest, streams, and waterfalls can be felt up close.
