🔥 OCTOBER 28 — KEN MATSUZAKI

Join us for a special day with Ken Matsuzaki Sensei, one of Japan’s most renowned contemporary ceramic artists and a distinguished master of Mashiko pottery.

A student of Living National Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka, Matsuzaki Sensei has developed a highly distinctive style rooted in Mashiko and the Mingei tradition, known for his expressive forms and powerful Oribe, Shino and Yohen surfaces.

The day begins with a rare live demonstration at Mashiko Tougei Club, offering participants an intimate insight into his techniques and creative process.

10:15–10:30 — Tea break
10:30–11:45 — Demonstration
11:45–12:45 — Lunch
12:50 — Departure from Mashiko Tougei Club
13:00–16:00 — Private studio visit at Ken Matsuzaki Sensei’s studio

Matsuzaki Sensei will open the doors to his private studio, showing participants his workspace, working methods and kiln, and sharing insight into his creative process. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit his gallery and purchase his works directly from the master.

Did you know that Kim-sensei is not only an exceptional master of creating monumental Korean onggi vessels, but is also highly skilled in wheel throwing and sculptural pottery?

With years of experience in production pottery, Kim-sensei can throw a perfectly formed cup in just one minute—that’s around 60 cups in an hour. Watching him work is truly mesmerizing. If you’d like to witness his incredible craftsmanship firsthand, join our workshop this October in Mashiko.

Before the invention of the electric pottery wheel, kick wheels were used for centuries. Working with a kick wheel requires exceptional skill, balance, and concentration. Kim-sensei has mastered these traditional techniques, which are rarely practiced today, and he will demonstrate these remarkable skills during his workshop.

He continues to preserve this important craft tradition, using the kick wheel to create large vases and Korean onggi stoneware vessels, traditionally used for food storage and fermentation.

Although he is not widely known outside ceramic circles, Kim-sensei is a true master of large-scale onggi making. He is capable of building impressive vessels entirely by hand using the coil technique, while also producing functional pottery of outstanding quality. His sculptural works reveal a distinctive sense of humor, freedom, and creativity that reflect both his technical mastery and artistic personality.

Meet Ryuji Hodaka – Guest Master of our 3 Days – 3 Masters Workshop

Before dedicating his life to ceramics, Ryuji Hodaka spent 16 years as a chef of traditional Japanese cuisine. His culinary career took him to Spain, where he served at the residence of the Japanese Ambassador and had the honor of preparing meals for distinguished guests, including His Majesty the Emperor of Japan during his visit to the Japanese Embassy in Madrid in 2001.

His passion for creating a complete dining experience naturally led him to pottery. Believing that food and the vessels it is served in should exist in perfect harmony, he chose to become a ceramic artist at the age of 34.

Since 2013, Hodaka has held numerous solo exhibitions across Japan and has devoted himself to an extraordinary personal challenge: creating one chawan (tea bowl) every single day. Today, his collection has grown to more than 3,000 unique tea bowls, each reflecting his dedication to craftsmanship, discipline, and the beauty of everyday ceramics.

Beyond his exceptional skills as a ceramic artist, Hodaka-san is known for creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in his workshops. His calm presence, genuine openness, and radiant cheerfulness make every participant feel comfortable and inspired, turning the workshop into a truly memorable experience.

During this demonstration, Master Kim Yong Man will introduce participants to the process of creating large-scale Onggi vessels, sharing the techniques, knowledge, and traditions behind this unique form of Korean pottery.
