Seiza Chair
part3
When sitting in seiza on the floor, the body’s weight rests on the heels, often causing numbness. This chair supports the body through a detachable seat, relieving pressure on the legs while maintaining the posture.
I considered adding a central support, similar to a small Japanese seiza stool placed between the legs. However, I felt this might be inconvenient for those wearing kimono or skirts. I also reflected on the gesture of placing the seat (Shosa, the mindful and deliberate manner of movement in Japanese culture). Taking these considerations into account, I concluded that this configuration was the most balanced solution.
In addition to seiza, the chair also accommodates sitting cross-legged, allowing a more relaxed posture in informal settings. The original design assumed that users would remove their shoes before sitting. However, since this version was created for an exhibition where many visitors would try the chair, it was adapted so that it could be used while wearing shoes. Afterward, I plan to continue refining the design through everyday use.
正座の時は着物で座れること、座る時の所作にも留意しました。
日常生活で使いながら、より快適なものを目指し改善して行く予定です。
